Hi McKella,

I know in OO (Overcoming Overeating) the authors say to think of one column as mouth hunger and the other as stomach hunger, and if your checks are more in the mouth hunger column, they suggest you begin to nudge yourself in the direction of stomach hunger; maybe wait for stomach hunger tomorrow morning and see how that feels for you. They say don't beat yourself up but do begin to shift those checks from mouth to stomach hunger. It may take some sitting with a bit of anxiety as you await stomach hunger. Think of how self-nurturing it will be to eat when you are hungry!! Maybe if you are anxious while waiting in the morning, have a cup of tea or coffee; if I awake and am not hungry right away, I'll just have a cup of coffee, and I'll look forward to becoming hungry. Sometimes I'm a bit impatient, but I've learned that hunger will come; it is actually quite reliable. In fact I find hunger to be a lot more reliable

than satiation cues. So good luck; I know this is IE, but when you mentioned mouth hunger I thought of OO because they say mouth and stomach hunger. I'm a follower of IE, OO, and Koenig's Normal Eating; the triad of normal eating, lol!

I find it easiest to eat intuitively when I am truly hungry, and that's when it's easiest for me to eat what I want, slowly, savoring, and stopping when I'm comfortably full. I'm eating a cookie right now from mouth hunger, and I've felt a little frantic all day. I don't know why, but I think I had some stressful dreams last night. Is that weird that dreams can throw off my mood? Hunger is a weird thing. > >> > I think one of the biggest reasons I eat when I'm not hungry is because I get angry. I want to be hungry so I can eat, taste and have that experience, but I get angry because I know my body doesn't want it, so I often eat anyway and regret it later, because I know I won't be hungry for a long time. I rarely feel stomach hunger because I can't stop eating when I'm not hungry, especially at meal times. It's like I'm afraid I won't get hungry. Maybe I'm made at the limits of my appetite, because my body doesn't want as much as my brain does. > > Any suggestions?> >

Hi McKella,

It sounds like you're doing really well. You have many stresses, and it sounds like even so you've been doing well. It IS a huge success that you didn't feel guilty and that you felt stomach hunger for breakfast!! Way to go!

After eating the cookies yesterday from mouth hunger, I thought more about my day and my emotions. I am under a lot of stress because I'm graduating this semester and I started looking for a job, but I'm an English major and not a lot of employers are looking for someone to analyze Faulkner or write novels for them. I'm trying to finish a first draft of a novel also. I'm just coming out of winter blues, training a new supervisor at work, and I just don't think I was ready for Monday. I did have a lot of success yesterday; I talked with my supervisor and coworkers about issues at work, so that was cleared up, and I took a relaxing walk after work. I probably should have sat with my feelings instead of eating them, but I didn't want to. It's like my brain is running around and doesn't slow down to think until I get my cookie fix. I don't feel guilty about eating though, which is a huge success. I even got up and walked this morning before school,

read a little bit, and felt stomach hunger for breakfast. Today is turning out better already. McKella>> Hi McKella,> > Could it possibly be that rather than the body not wanting to feel the hunger, that maybe your brain is a little fearful of feeling hunger sensations? > > Jeanne>

I definitely can wake up stressed from dreams! Which can be hard because sometimes I don't even barely remember the dream, so I can't directly recognize and address the source of my anxiety! Eating can definitely be a way to escape from and try to soothe that anxiety.

When I'm feeling that way, I find it helpful to take a moment to stop and recognize the feeling, for example anxiety, and name it to myself, and remind myself that I'm really ok, that I can survive the unpleasant feeling, and now can work on consciously calming and soothing my mind, the same way I would soothe a child that woke up scared from a bad dream.

I hope this might be helpful.

Abby

Ps good for you for all the work you did to allay your anxiety today!
