Guest guest
I definitely don't have low acid symptoms. What I can't figure out is why lately it's been worse when I've actually been eating pretty well. I tried an experiment yesterday and gave myself permission to have a binge (per a suggestion from Gillian--giving permission takes away the guilt). It wasn't even a very big binge, but the reflux has just been terrible. I'm going to have to be really careful about my food choices for a while to see if that helps. The only thing I can think of is that I've been eating a little more fat than usual, but even that hasn't been very much. When I don't purge and don't overeat to the point of discomfort for long periods, I rarely have reflux. However I also have several symptoms of low stomach acid (thin, tearing fingernails, multiple food born bacterial infections, difficulty digesting meats), when I don't take betaine hydrochloride. I'd love to stop taking anything to improve digestion. I'd also love to be able to eat anything I want without reflux. For now, avoiding overeating and abstaining from purging seems like the best approach to prevent reflux. However, I also try to limit foods which relax my LEV. I can eat them, but not several at the same meal or large amounts. SUE

Guest guest
The weird thing is I didn't really overeat--I classify it as a "binge" just because I was eating my typical binge foods, but I wasn't stuffing them in (lol). Just a sort of casual binge, if there is such a thing. I wasn't more than moderately full. Sohni sue wrote: Hi Sohni: Overeating anything definitely exacerbates my reflux symptoms. I sometimes think I can 'get away with' overeating, because I don't need to lose weight. However, reflux reminds me to stop eating when I feel moderately full, rather than overly full, so I don't cause myself unnecessary discomfort. Guest guest
I realized after I posted that I had a box of Jr. Mints, so maybe that did it. Mint doesn't usually bother me, but seems like lately a lot of atypical things are causing problems. Sohni sue wrote: Hi Sohni: Maybe your body is just adjusting to eating less. So your 'moderately full' may not feel as good anymore. Unless I'm taking meds that cause symtpoms, I tend to interpret any uncomfortable sensations as signs that my body wants me to eat differently (less, more, different foods, different times, etc.). Guest guest
Normally it wouldn't be a problem unless I ate a ton of it. So I'm not sure what the deal is lately. Sohni sue wrote: The combination of chocolate, mints and sugar (in Jr. Mints) could easily make me have reflux. Any one of those ingredients may not bother me, but eating a whole box of candy which contained all 3 of those ingredients would trigger reflux for me.
