I also suspect chronic purging (over 35 years) initially relaxed my esophageal

valve often enough to cause my reflux. When I don't purge and don't overeat to

the point of discomfort for long periods, I rarely have reflux. However I also

have several symptoms of low stomach acid (thin, tearing fingernails, multiple

food born bacterial infections, difficulty digesting meats), when I don't take

betaine hydrochloride. I'd love to stop taking anything to improve digestion.

I'd also love to be able to eat anything I want without reflux. For now,

avoiding overeating and abstaining from purging seems like the best approach to

prevent reflux. However, I also try to limit foods which relax my LEV. I can eat

them, but not several at the same meal or large amounts.

Hi Sohni: Overeating anything definitely exacerbates my reflux symptoms. I

sometimes think I can 'get away with' overeating, because I don't need to lose

weight. However, reflux reminds me to stop eating when I feel moderately full,

rather than overly full, so I don't cause myself unnecessary discomfort.

The combination of chocolate, mints and sugar (in Jr. Mints) could easily make

me have reflux. Any one of those ingredients may not bother me, but eating a

whole box of candy which contained all 3 of those ingredients would trigger

reflux for me.
