Guest guest
Hi Alana: Thanks for the clarification. I've observed that every IE book emphasizes different IE guidelines. Some emphasize legalizing food (IE, Overcoming Overeating). Some emphasize eating only when hungry, stopping when full (ThinWithin, Geneen Roth's books). Some emphasize mindful eating or slowly savoring each bite ( McKenna's 'I Can Make You Thin', Susie Orbach's " On Eating " ). I suspect people who are 'permitters' (dislike rules about eating) are more likely to join this board and focus on legalization rather than mindful eating. People who are 'restrictors' (love rules) tend to focus on the eat only when hungry, stop when full guidelines and maybe embrace the mindful eating, because it's one more 'rule'. Restrictors are often frightened by 'legalization'. So different people will embrace and promote different guidelines. If someone pushes 'mindful eating', just assume they like boundaries and may be a 'restrictor' (like me LOL). If they have difficulty embracing any guideline besides eat whatever you like, they are most likely permitters. Neither totally restricting or totally permitting is 'healthy'. Both are ways to cope with emotional challenges. So as they progress in their intuitive eating journey permitters may embrace more 'start/stop eating' and mindful eating guidelines. Likewise restrictors may become more comfortable with 'legalizatoin'. Initially we all favor the guidelines which best suit our preferences. Eventually we will follow all the IE guidelines. SUE > > Sue, > My connotation that eating mindful and eating without doing anything as peer pressure was not directed at your comments. It is a feeling I have in general around inutuitive eating. I don't know if anyone else out there feels this way, but there is a feeling that one must master mindful eating in order to master intuitive eating. > I just wanted to throw out there that in my opinion one can still do other things while eating and still stay in tune with the taste of the food and with our bodies. > Alana
