Hi Sandy,

This is a very difficult position to be in. I hope

that someday I

won't be in the same boat. But I do have some

experience I can share

with you, since I had two teeth removed on my lower

left. I really

didn't want to do it, but I wanted my knee pain to

resolve (and it

did after the root canal removals!)

So, I can say this....I have a partial that fits

around my lower

teeth. The partial contains my two missing molars and

it took a few

weeks to get used to it, but now I can eat normally

with it in and I

only take it out at night. Sometimes I even sleep

with it in. It is

not uncomfortable at all.

Having said that, I am not sure that I would feel the

same about an

upper plate, but I don't know. I have a friend who

had a missing

front tooth, and she had a plate that she didn't like.

She worked on

getting an implant for that front tooth, but went

through all kinds

of delays and setbacks with various infections in the

bone. I know

she spent thousands of dollars trying to get that

implant to work. At

this time, I don't know if it ever worked out for her

because she

moved away. But I do know she was in the process of

getting that

implant for over a year, with lots of trouble due to

infections.

Another woman I know lost tons of weight because her

dentures did not

fit properly and the dentist didn't give a hoot and

she could barely

eat anymore. She looked rail thin the last time I saw

her. I felt so

bad for her.

Personally, I would think twice about getting an

implant. It means

that they will drill into the bone, and set a piece of

metal in it.

It just sounds like a bad idea for those of us who

have had reactions

to metals and/or chemicals in the past. I don't

think I will ever

consider dental implants. But then again, if I lose

all my teeth, I

don't know?

Is there a way you can try a partial to find out if it

would work out

for you? This is what I told myself...it cost about

$600 and was

partially covered by insurance. It's worked out fine

and I have no

concerns with it.
