I had a nice run. Technically it would be called a jog, or maybe a slow trot, but why use the diminutive and deprive myself of glory? Might as well soak it up!

I went about 40 minutes... the most I've done so far. I have no idea how many miles that is, and prefer not to know because then I would know my pace. And again, why set myself up for disappointment?

I got to run a bit in the big park in brooklyn, prospect park, which is a first among runs from my new apartment. I wanted to keep running until I reached a road that transversed the park, to create a loop, but ran out of time. My goal is to build up to running the full 3.3 mile loop in the park plus the 1+ miles each way to get there. It's fun having a goal. Where I lived before my regular route was only about 3.5 miles and lengthening out entailed more time running in traffic, not more time with trees.

I'm curious to see how long it will take me to get to the 5.5 or some miles, comfortably. I don't feel competitive or urgent about it, and want to be careful to respect my body, lest I get injured. If I'm not too sore tomorrow, id like to try to run again tomorrow. Given that I'm fairly new back to running, that will be another " first in a long time " for me.

i had to give up running for a few months because it was just feeling too high pressure or intimidating for some reason, and i just didnt want to do it at all. it feels good to want to go again.now i see it's already 48 degrees out at 10 am and i'm really tempted to try again... but my calves are awfully sore. i may settle for a long walk and some yoga. we shall see.

congrats to all who made it out into the spring sunshine! abby

Thanks so much, Abby!  I certainly appreciate the reminder of taking it slow for a while!  I know those previously sleeping muscles may be talking to me a little tomorrow, but they needed to wake up anyway.

You're correct, this is certainly the perfect time of the year to get back into the routine!  It is about 60 degrees here in Georgia today but with lots of sunshine.  Still a little chilly in the shade, but after what we've been through here recently weather wise, this is such a wonderful and welcomed change!!!   Of course, we haven't been beaten up quite as badly as you all in the northeast, a snow-cane, WOW!  For us down here, I can't remember a winter where the cold snaps have lasted as long as they have this year.

Hope you have an absolutely wonderful run, Abby!!!  I'm off to feed the birds and soak up a little more sunshine (but without the coat)!  Have a great rest of the weekend!

All the best,

Jeanne

Hi Abby,

I'm enjoying reading about your jog around Prospect Park! It sounds wonderful and invigorating! I like that you've set goals. And I really like that you're considering your health and not over-taxing your body in the process.

I have a very modest goal for myself; right now I walk, speed walk, and also jog. When I jog, it's on the boardwalk currently. I can handle jogging the length of the boardwalk one way at the moment, and my goal is to first jog both ways on the boardwalk, at a comfortable pace, and then transition to jogging on sand. I've done it successfully before and want to do that again; it's very modest and enough for me.

Much more important to me is swimming; a mile in the ocean without stopping against the current :.) That's my goal. I can swim for hours without getting out but that's not non-stop of course. I love choppy water and I love when the current is just strong enough that I'd be swimming in one place if I didn't really work for each foot gained. I love the challenge of that situation.

Laurie,I know, I feel like having a goal like that makes it so much more fun! I was reading an article somewhere about a woman who could only run maybe 3 minutes. so each run she would run one streetlight further. it's not so challenging as to be overwhelming, but it's exciting!

and this is such a great time of year to be in the park because each run i will see new changes. so far it's just that the snow is basically gone. i wonder when i will see the first signs of bulbs poking their little green peaks above the ground?

still debating for today... your swimming goal is AWESOME! do you swim a mile along the shoreline? and then let the current carry you back? how do you know how far to go? i would LOVE something like that. it's not warm enough to swim in the ocean for more than a couple months of the year... and in nyc you have to be choosy about where you swim. i used to swim competitively. i was terrible but i loved it -- distance events. once i did an open water swim (race) in sonoma county. it was so fun. and the last two summers i've done a swim across walden pond in the summer with my cousin. that was super fun, too.

this summer i've decided not to work (my job is a 10 month job but i usually get another job for the summer). all part of self-care that goes along with IE. so i'd love to swim in nyc pools over the summer. i am no longer interested in indoor pools but outdoor would be great! it will be like the running... in the beginning i'll have to stop at the end of every length of the pool, but it's fun to see myself getting stronger. the swim team background plus lifeguarding and teaching swimming, way back in my past, at least has taught me great form so that helps a lot -- i'm still very efficient, just weak!

thanks for sharing your swimming goals and other ones as well! please let us know how you do with them. abby

Hi Abby,

I think the jogging goal of three minutes, light post to light post, is great because then no one has to feel like they can't do it because they can't run a full mile or half mile yet. A person who hasn't jogged can walk and jog like that in combination; that's basically always how I start if I've been away from it a while.

Swimming, I love it! I'm glad we share this love of swimming :.) I live in Point Pleasant, NJ, and there's a beach break here, which is awesome for swimming; I can be within 10 feet of the sand and yet still have gotten out beyond the breaking waves! And then I simply swim parallel to the shore line. From walking along the beach, I know that down to the inlet and back is a mile. I'd love to swim the whole thing against the current which would mean swimming past the inlet and probably the length of the Manasquan beach. (If that direction is against current that day.) In the other direction, a mile is probably down to the end of Bay Head. If I want to know for sure I'll map it or drive along ocean ave and check out the mileage. There was one day where the current was so strong, that it took an all out effort to go a foot; it was a major challenge and I loved it; I love the adrenaline rush of

swimming like that. I'm not a fast swimmer; I have great endurance though and I'm not looking for speed at my age, but definitely to increase my endurance. I have a wetsuit, so I'll start ocean swimming mid April, and I'll swim til probably last week of Oct, or first week or two of Nov. depending upon how the water cools. I do this each year, but with lifeguards, I take on the rough water and waves, and without lifeguards, I only swim when the water's pretty calm.

Your open water swim sounded amazing. Walden pond reminds me of the Jane Fonda movie :.) It must have been a nice swim. How long a swim was it across the pond? Isn't it interesting how the efficiency of each swim stroke matter so much? Sometimes I see people spinning their arms as fast as they possibly can :.)

and this is such a great time of year to be in the park because each run i will see new changes. so far it's just that the snow is basically gone. i wonder when i will see the first signs of bulbs poking their little green peaks above the ground?

still debating for today...

your swimming goal is AWESOME! do you swim a mile along the shoreline? and then let the current carry you back? how do you know how far to go? i would LOVE something like that. it's not warm enough to swim in the ocean for more than a couple months of the year... and in nyc you have to be choosy about where you swim. i used to swim competitively. i was terrible but i loved it -- distance events. once i did an open water swim (race) in sonoma county. it was so fun. and the last two summers i've done a swim across walden pond in the summer with my cousin. that was super fun, too.

this summer i've decided not to work (my job is a 10 month job but i usually get another job for the summer). all part of self-care that goes along with IE. so i'd love to swim in nyc pools over the summer. i am no longer interested in indoor pools but outdoor would be great! it will be like the running... in the beginning i'll have to stop at the end of every length of the pool, but it's fun to see myself getting stronger. the swim team background plus lifeguarding and teaching swimming, way back in my past, at least has taught me great form so that helps a lot -- i'm still very efficient, just weak!

thanks for sharing your swimming goals and other ones as well! please let us know how you do with them.

Given that I'm fairly new back to running, that will be another "first in a long time" for me.

i had to give up running for a few months because it was just feeling too high pressure or intimidating for some reason, and i just didnt want to do it at all. it feels good to want to go again.

now i see it's already 48 degrees out at 10 am and i'm really tempted to try again... but my calves are awfully sore. i may settle for a long walk and some yoga. we shall see.

congrats to all who made it out into the spring sunshine!

Jeanne

Good job, Abby, and congratulations!!! Who cares whether it is a jog or run or how many miles you ran --- you were out there and doing something good and healthy for your body! Please do not deprive yourself of your well-deserved glory! You have every reason to be proud of yourself! And should be!!! You'll reach the goal you have set for yourself!

I can certainly understand about the pressures we sometimes put on ourselves about exercising! I've gotten a lot of enjoyment from walking over the years. But it became a real drag when I allowed it to become more of an obsession to get those additional food points. Not to mention the fear that if I didn't walk most days of the week, I'd gain weight. What nutty behavior! I'm with you that it feels so good to want to be there again just because you want to be!

Anyway, the back of my thighs were whimpering when I got up this morning as was my butt and arms but what a wonderful feeling it is!!!! I thought I needed a bit of a rest today, but I'm planning on walking tomorrow. Got those long johns ready just in case!

All the best,

Jeanne

Hi Abby,

I live in West county.  Where did you do your swim?  I used to swim

several miles a week (pool), but right now I don't belong to a gym (no

gyms with pools near here) and can't get to the city pool regularly.

Swimming is a very good way to release tension.
