Guest guest
Thanks for replying. The recipe is 100oz water, 38 oz lye, 128oz olive oil, 80 coconut oil, 48ozs palm oil. After the fact I used the on line calculator of ye olde soap shoppe and it said I require much less water. the 18 pound recipe I use has always turned out great so I can't figure it out. I would appreciate any help I could get. DeeDee Momma Pajama wrote: > In the past I've only made up to 18 pound > > batches at a time. Guest guest
> > i've got to write the percentages down here and look. > > how does it look today? > > dear, i think you could have a lye heavy batch here. what kind of scale are you using? i ask because mine is digital, but there are days it gets a bit sassy and i have to be extra careful. looks like you are right at the sap mark, meaning your lye =oil and there is no room for error. in otherwords, if you are even a little short on the oil, you'll have a caustic soap. (for those who might still be a bit shy on the superfat questions, this is good example of why it is a wise idea to include just a bit of extra oil (superfat). each lye molecule needs an oil molecule for a partner in the dance. you always want a couple extra oil guys hanging out just in case..............) i try to superfat at least a little bit, usually in the 5% range. there is the DOS controversy with the chance of rancidity with extra oils in your soap, but i don't know anyone who does not SF just a bit. (shea, castor, whatever). the extra water is " sementatics " for the most part. during cure your water evaporates, if you have too much water, usually it just means a softer soap and a longer cure. but i think your water is pretty close, nothing to be alarmed at. do you have access to ph strips? this might be one you want to double check. you could always rebatch, this is a perfect candidate. there are many good methods. crockpot, oven, etc. wow. that's alot of soap! are you doing a mall too? Guest guest
Thanks so much for the input on this one you guys. I thought there was too much water in this especially since I'm having a hell of a time getting it out of the mold,lol.. I did this recipe once before but the mold(my husband made) failed so I wasn't sure what had happened at the time. It leaked all over. My scale is a new digital one as the other one I had was not very accurate so I think its working ok or at least it bloody well better be,lol. I usually do the same recipe but on a smaller scale(18pd). It has been fantastic so far but I have a large highland games ( 70,000 people) coming up and need to increase my quantity. Its my first time out though I've been making soap for about a year I'm going to venture out into the world, wish me luck. I didn't know you could use that much essential oil in your soap this is good to know. My business is called " The Soap Mill co. " OR in Quebec we say " co Le Moulin de Savon " Thanks so much, Dee Dee, /Garden of Soap wrote: > Sorry - just joining this thread. Guest guest
Sorry - just joining this thread. Let's see if I have this straight. You're wondering why your batch failed. You were using: 100oz water 38 oz lye 128 oz olive oil 80 oz coconut oil 48 ozs palm oil I just did a quick run though with my lye calculator (Theresa Lott's) and it shows that you should be using 91.9 oz water and 37.1 oz lye. Guest guest
<just goes to show you, ask two women, get two different answers, too funny!> Isn't that the truth!
