Group discussion, what a great idea! Hey, that's one thing we do around here

too! <smile>

One of the doctors really must have had cause to organize your group meeting.

Not something I can see my doctor's practice doing.

different kind of doctor appointment

Hi all

Today I had a different kind of doctor appointment. Several weeks ago I got

a letter from the family practice center where I go asking me if I would be

interested in a group meeting with other diabetic patients. So I filled out

the form and indicated I would be interested. Today was the first meeting.

There were only four of us, and the doctors hope to get more patients to

attend future meetings. We each got private time with our doctors and had

the standard blood pressure check, weight check, etc. in addition to the

meeting. I also got my flu shot. It's an interesting concept, and I do

plan to attend the next meeting in January. I'd be interested to hear if

any of you do anything similar. My doctor said this is a growing trend and

that studies show diabetics who attend groups like this for support do

better with their diabetes management.

Hi All,

I belong to an HMO through Humana and the group I go to is very much in

favor of these group meetings.

When you meet with other Diabetics you discover that your problems are not

at all unique and that you are not being personally picked upon by the

Health Fairy. (LOLLOLLOL)

Just as with this list you also have the opportunity to learn new things and

see how others handle their problems.

Unlike this list you do not have he opportunity to see how other blind

people deal with their medications and such.

Some good points, Cy. I do like this list because we are all visually

impaired to some degree and have things to discuss that sighted diabetics

don't know anything about.

I did agree to show up at the next meeting in January. But I'm not sure how

long I'll continue going. Even though I did get a couple minutes alone with

my doctor to discuss the numbers from the lab tests performed last week, I

didn't have time to bring up other issues. I would prefer more one-on-one

time with the doctor. And I didn't feel any particular bond with the three

other people who showed up last night for the meeting. So, unless things

change, I probably won't go to more than one or two further meetings.

To come full circle in a way, you might suggest our list. I forget: Were any of

these diabetics (in the group discussion) blind or vi?

No, none of them were blind or VI. Maybe next time I’ll ask my doctor if

any of the diabetics who come to the clinic are blind. I’m not sure if he’d

be able to tell me without breaking confidentiality rules, but for sure I

will suggest the list if anyone with vision problems does come to any of the

meetings.

There is going to be much more of this in the future especially for those

patients receiving care in the public sector as it is much more cost

effective to provide patient support and diabetes education services. It is

working well in many places and it has been done for several years in

hospitals with large diabetes education programs and in public clinics.

You are probably right, Chuck. Group therapy has a proven record of success.

Especially for newly diagnosed diabetics who are clueless. And there will always

be people who find more motivation after meeting with others, as opposed to

figuring out how to solve a problem by themselves.
