Guest guest
I'm in OA and am a sponsor. OA's chief motto is "take what you want and leave the rest."As a sponsor I don't preach restriction or weight loss. I promote recovery and strive for it myself.I want myself and my sponsees to follow the steps toward recovery and work toward eliminating the compulsions and inner turmoil that makes eating intuitively so hard for someone struggling with an overeating addiction.Other groups and sponsors don't share my view but you're free to find someone who helps you recover and follow IE. The two are not mutually exclusive. I saw lisa mention OA. I have struggled with going to OA. I have a strong belief in 12 step recovery. The emphasis on abstinance, restriction and weight loss really bothered me. It certainly seems to contradict a my focus on IEing. Has anyone elso had any experience with OA? Should I go back or give it up? I know I need some type of support system. This is a good start(:

Guest guest
This is a great question. I have some very strong opinions about this, but I do believe everyone must decide what is right for them. I went to OA one time and had a bad experience that only involved one person. But at the time I was quite vulnerable and I decided I was never going back, even to a different group. On the other hand, I have heard of people who believe they were saved by OA (just as I believe I was saved by IE!). And there are people in this group that go to OA and do fine using both the OA approach and IE. It’s my belief that food issues are not an addiction. We had a big discussion about this on a professional intuitive eating board a while back and it was really interesting to see all the different opinions, which I completely respect. The reason I don’t like to use the word addiction is first, it has a social stigma attached to it and what we say to ourselves can become reality. So if you say you are addicted to food, you will have a harder time overcoming it. Again, just my beliefs from my own personal and professional experiences. I know the 12 step approach works very well for many situations. But those situations are actual addictions. You must abstain from the thing you are addicted to, and where many get stuck is how can I abstain from food? I’ve heard people in OA say you must abstain from your binge foods. Given that most of us binge on white flour and white sugar items, abstinence is not the greatest option, we live in a world of convenience and that includes products with white sugar and white flour. And emotions drive us to eat, and very often the body craves sugar and it’s a physiological thing, the brain wants simple carbs to help with the levels of serotonin in the brain (one of the neurotransmitters that affect anxiety and depression). IE tells us we can eat what we really want and we no longer have to live with deprivation. Over time, when all foods become truly permissible, the cravings or strong desire for certain foods lessens and you can eat those foods when you want, but you no longer binge on them or even overeat on them. For me, it’s just a saner way to go. J Tribole actually addressed this question on her blog a while back. She did a great job and was able to remain neutral, basically saying the same thing I did, that you need to find what is right for you. Guest guest
There is a non-diet approach to OA group I've seen in yahoo. I'm a member. It's quite good... lots of non-dieting recovery there, weight loss, etc. And I tried the food plan years ago and just could not do it... but there are many OA folks who do other stuff apparently.Best,"Defy the enemies of freedom and all forms of fatalism." --Greg Boyd I saw lisa mention OA. Guest guest
Gillian, Would you mind saying a bit more about the relationship between simple carbs and serotontin levels. I'm interested in what you have to say about physiological sugar cravings. I agree with what you say about the practicality of abstaining from sugar and white flour. I abstained from sugar for over a year, and even then it wasn't 100%. It's just very difficult to do if you eat any processed foods at all. Sohni Gillian Hood-son wrote: This is a great question. It's nice to hear that there is discussion amongst " professional IE people " . I used to believe that food is not addictive like nicotine is addictive. However, I changed my mind after reading several books that dealt with food addiction and neurobiology. The latest book I read on that subject is " The End of Overeating " . Food seems to be pretty MUCH addictive, at least the processed stuff that is designed in the way that people feel the NEED to come back for more. Regards s. Guest guest
For myself, I feel like food is addicting. It would explain why for the past 30 years I have been overweight. I do know that a lot of it is habit and just mental but some must be a physical addiction as well. This just goes for me but it is nice to be on here where everyone is trying to stop dieting. > > > It's my belief that food issues are not an addiction. Guest guest
?Hi S and others. Neal Barnard has proven the addictive nature of cheese...when we are babies we are hard-wired to physically crave mother's milk...it only makes sense. The body responds to that with an endorphin reaction. Cow milk is extremely concentrated comparatively, and when we eat it we get that endorphin response from babyhood but even stronger. How many vegetarians, myself included, have said things like, " I could NEVER give up cheese! " I have tried to go vegan for years, and have succombed to the cheese monster for years. I've thought that IE is all I need, but I do feel that I have a physical addiction to dairy. If I didn't, my ethics wouldn't conflict with my actual eating habits. And, it seems to me that after I take the first bite I can't get enough...I have to smother cheese on everything. This is the same whether cheese is " legal " for me or not... so it's not a forbidden food issue. I feel that IE is the way for me to address my eating habits, but I also respect and believe those who feel that food is like a drug for them. Who am I to say their experience is invalid? For me, cheese has been an addiction that I will give up. Once that craving is gone, it's easier for me to intuitively eat. We all have to find our way. Thanks for sharing!
Re: OA Gillian Hood-son wrote: > It's my belief that food issues are not an addiction. It's nice to hear that there is discussion amongst "professional IEpeople". I used to believe that food is not addictive like nicotine isaddictive. However, I changed my mind after reading several books thatdealt with food addiction and neurobiology. The latest book I read onthat subject is "The End of Overeating". Food seems to be pretty MUCHaddictive, at least the processed stuff that is designed in the way thatpeople feel the NEED to come back for more.Regardss. My addiction to food happened when I started using food to not face my issues. So I guess you could say that not facing my issues is more of an avoidance then an addiction. Food is great when I am not using it as a cover. I don't embrace the addiction idea either. I tried OA for several year. I never really got addicted to OA either. Guest guest
I'm in OA and don't believe FOOD is addicting. I believe EATING is addicting as a behavior in the same way as gambling or sex are.I think the word "compulsion" might be better. I don't think eating per se is addicting. I'm not addicted to eating carrots. I'm also not addicted to eating apples. However, it feels like an addiction as soon as it comes to certain foods. I know that there are people who binge on carrots and apples. However, I'm not one of them. For me it also depends on the type of food consumed. Regards s. Guest guest
It takes many forms in different people. I don't binge on carrots or apples but I have binged on salad bars and steak and other "non-junk" foods. I'm discovering a bit of an addiction to sugar in myself. But, all in all, I'm realizing that I can turn to almost any form of food for comfort. It can almost all keep those emotions where thru can't hurt you Karlen wrote: > I'm in OA and don't believe FOOD is addicting. I'd still say there are addicting and non-addicting foods. Now it would be interesting to know what sauce was on the salad and how the steak was marinated. :-) Regards s.
