Guest guest
Hmmm, perhaps try sitting through that three or four hours and not eating (even though emotions rise up in you, etc). See how you feel around 5 hours. In general, most people have a blood sugar dip by 6 hours if they have not eaten and will feel light headed, cranky and or tummy signals. For many of us, it's around 5 hours. I eat breakfast and then lunch around 5 hours later... same with dinner. If it's going to be longer than 5 hours between lunch and dinner, I have a snack; my body tells me I need it in that case. I do think it takes a lot of work for many of us to feel what hunger is like. We have ignored it or eaten over it for so long...Best,Subject: Re: Hunger Pains AFTER eatingTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Date: Saturday, April 10, 2010, 6:38 PM Unfortunately, it is just one type of food. It's all foods. It takes me that long to find physical hunger. After years of ignoring the signals, I just cannot identify them. It doesn't matter the amount of food I've eaten prior. I need to get better about asking where I am on the hunger scale. To this point still however, I cannot find a physical signal prior to 5 hours. I rarely am able to wait for 5 hours. I eat about every 3-4 hours.

Guest guest
Is there a chance you have undiagnosed food allergies? Celiac disease? I would at least consider, however briefly, that there could be a physiological reason for discomfort that feels like hunger pangs AFTER eating. Also... What drives you to eat after 3-4 hours? I find sometimes that when I am suddenly aware of consciously noticing that I am NOT hungry despite having eaten several hours prior... that a few minutes later I AM hungry. Maybe a sudden interest in or desire to eat(ing) is your clue, for now, that you are getting hungry? Good for you for being so patient with the process... Abby I usually try to wait three hours to eat, unless I decide to eat emotionally. It just feels " wrong " to eat without any hunger signals being present. I just haven't been able to identify any others even with the help of a group IE therapist who specializes in this -as well as my regular one who has read the IE book. It's been 2-3 years. I guess I have been ignoring these natural signals for so long. I will keep eating every 3-4 hours even though I'm not feeling the signals yet. Guest guest
Hi Abby: Delayed reaction food allergies and/or celiac disease symptoms almost never feel like hunger pangs. Of course anaphylactic food allergies may cause more immediate, life threatening symptoms. However, gastrointestinal symptoms of food allergies usually include cramping pain, bloating, diarrhea and/or constipation. Some people experience joint pain or headaches, rather than gastrointestinal symptoms. SUE PS I led a local celiac support group for 3 years and post on a gluten intolerance/celiac disease website. I never heard anyone describe food allergy or celiac reactions as 'hunger pangs'. Most often their symptoms make eating less desirable. > > Is there a chance you have undiagnosed food allergies? Guest guest
Tripp, The situation that you describe sounds odd to me, especially because you've been practicing IE for 2-3 years. Have you consulted with a nutritionist or a doctor about that situation? A good friend of mine has gastrointestinal issues. Once he got a supplement from a holistic practitioner, his stomach issues greatly improved. You could have something going on with the acid levels in your tummy or some other physiological component. Those " hunger pangs " may not be true hunger pangs. Latoya > > I have been working on Intuitive Eating for about 2-3 years. I have a very difficult time finding physical hunger. Sometimes I can find it after about 5 hours. Usually I can't wait that long because I get tired of waiting to eat. But when I do, I can find it. However, by the time I find it -it goes from a stomach twinge to some short pangs. Then when I do eat what seems to be a medium amount (say 400-500 calories although I don't consciously count calories anymore), afterwards my stomach feels even WORSE.... what I mean by that is huge hunger pangs. > > I do not believe the pains/pangs are due to not eating enough nor overeating. > > Any advice? >

Guest guest
Sue,I am not here to argue about whether or not someone has celiac disease... or any other diagnosis. That is not the point of THIS group. My point was merely that if Tripp is having pain or discomfort after eating, it's possible that those sensations are not hunger pangs, but could be some other issue. Which is the same point that Latoya makes below. Despite your experience with celiac disease, and mine as a nurse practitioner, it is not any of our place to diagnose people with diseases, nor to tell them that they can't possibly have a disease. But suggesting that someone may want to follow up with a health care provider to rule out any health issues is an appropriate suggestion. Guest guest
Hi, It might be that you are identifying hunger at the point when you are already very, very hungry? I'm not sure but it's something to consider. I have a struggle, not with finding hunger, but with comfortable satiety; my body is really weak on signals for that! I compensate by eating what I want but adding something with fiber like a fruit or lettuce salad or veggie. I don't restrict anything but find I really need something with fiber or my stomach doesn't feel a bit full....I don't know why this is; maybe something medical but I haven't been diagnosed. Guest guest
I think it makes sense to eat every 3 to 4 hours while you figure out the issue with the hunger signals. I wonder if you ever notice some subtle signs like a slight headache, or a hollow, empty feeling (this is so hard to describe, lol). Sometimes my stomach growls and I know it's hunger but other times there's no growl and I go by other subtler signals. I think checking in with yourself very frequently may help you to notice earlier signals. I've heard to rate yourself each half hr after you've eaten to really tune into the process of going from full to hungry.
