Hi, ,

I agree with what you say about carbs; in the past I've had digestive problems with wheat, so have to find other sources I like. I use brown rice pasta and really have grown to like it now; don't really like quinoa, and corn is also a problem for me. Oats are ok but I am not crazy about them, except in spurts!

You can learn about Nia here: http://nianow.com/. If you go to the "About" tab at the top and choose "Press," you'll see a "Watch Nia" button at the right. This direct link may or may not work:

Joy Tanksley, who I just realized last week is on this list (Joy, your blog is AWESOME!), has some blog posts on Nia, which is where I learned about it. I've gotten some of their DVDs and may enroll in a class near me, too.

Laurie,

Do you know to rinse the quinoa very well before cooking? The only other time

I've come across someone that didn't like quinoa, they didn't realize it needed

to be rinsed. It has a coating on it that makes it very bitter (protects it

from pests). So if you don't rinse that coating off before cooking it tastes

very bad. You'll see that when you do, it will foam up and you should rinse

until it's no longer foaming. Once rinsed, I think it's generally pretty bland

and reminds me very much of cous cous. But if you cook it with broth or stock

instead of water, I find that it's quite tasty.

Just thought I'd suggest that just in case as I think a lot of people don't

realize this.

Hi, Joy,

So far I've only tried the Nia "Global Unity" DVD, but I have purchased all three of the other ones. The "Global Unity" is divided into a spoken introduction, then a basic Nia class (which I did, and it is fun), and then the whole second half is devoted to practicing individual moves in slow motion. I haven't done that part yet.

Obviously, this "Global Unity" DVD is meant for beginners, so you may want to skip that one. The two of them say "The Class Experience" on them: Sanjana (Dynamic Ease: learning to move without overdoing anything), Opal (Balancing Yin and Yang Energy); and the third one says "Dance to Drums" (Unplugged: plugging into your own pulse and spirit). I'm looking forward to trying all these and will report back to the group when I do. Right now I think I'll stick to the beginning tape for a while--I still feel a little clunky doing that one, but the instructors (the founders of Nia) talk you through it and make you feel really good no matter what.

Thanks again, Joy, for recommending these on your blog. I love your video-blogs--you're so enthusiastic, you always make me smile!

Re: Nia

Laure! How sweet of you to mention me! I am thrilled to hear that you are stepping into Nia. I've recently moved and (very sadly) there is no Nia here. I may have to get some videos! What do you think of the ones you've used?

I have only tried the "Global Unity" DVD, but they stress throughout that you are to adapt everything for what your own body is telling you. Nia is meant to be easy, joyful exercise. Nothing they do is stressful. Most of the time your feet are planted on the floor, and all the steps are easy and flowing.

You might find the book "The End of Overeating" a very interesting read.

Kessler talks about the addictive nature of certain foods and food

combinations.

Best wishes
