Of the HI children here who...

has been since birth?

Our son's loss was identified at birth through the Newborn Hearing Screening

Program and follow-up testing confirmed that he was born profoundly deaf.

Lost hearing in infant/toddler years for a known reason?

What is the reason?

Lost hearing in infant/toddler years for NO known reason?

We believe that a virus that I had when I was pregnant caused his hearing

loss, although this cannot be confirmed 100%. We ruled out Connexin-26 and

other genetic factors, and since he has no other issues this is the most likely

cause for his loss.

has Cochlear Implant?

Will get the implant?

Yes. Without question a decision that we would make again as he has done

wonderfully with his implant. He had no benefit from hearing aids as his

audiogram started around 90 and sloped off the chart. He was implanted at 13

months with the N24.

Can sign?

can speak?

We've were strictly verbal with our son, until recently when we began to

learn/use basic signs during those times when we need to communicate to him when

his implant is not on. It's funny to us that we sign to him, but our deaf child

talks back to us - even when he can't hear!

Probably normal hearing or mild loss at birth -- don't know for sure.

Don't know when she lost hearing -- identified with mild-moderate loss at

age 6 and progressive since then.

No known reason.

Nope.

If or when she is a candidate, we will probably pursue this.

Just " fun " stuff like " I love you " , " mommy " , " thank you " , etc.

Oh, yeah. The trick is getting her to be quiet!!

Of the HI children here who...

Lost hearing in infant/toddler years for a known reason?

What is the reason?

<<We don't know when ' hearing loss began but it became noticeable when he

was nearly three and his language development seemed to halt and then reverse

itself. He was diagnosed at age 4 with a mild to severe loss which has now

progressed to mod to profound. has EVAS (enlarged vestibular aqueduct

syndrome) which was diagnosed by CAT scan.

Will get the implant?

is not a candidate at this time, nor have we considered it. We would also

never say never about anything like this, however.

Can sign?

We had introduced simple signs when ' communication skills were failing.

He now is nearly fluent in SEE (signed exact english) and we're trying to be.

:-)

can speak?

has wonderful speech skills now but that's after almost two years in a

total communication environment with daily auditory training. As another mom

here mentioned for her own child, benefits from sign for his receptive

language but usually responds orally to us. Most strangers would understand his

speech now.

I think this will help me know you all better. Thanks for your time.

You're welcome. :-)

is 7 1/2 years old.

We suspected a hearing loss as early as 4 years old - but looking back, we

realize it must have been there from at least toddlerhood. It was officially

diagnosed when he was 6 years old and was a mild to moderate loss. Between

ages 6 and 7 it progressed to a moderate to severe loss. It has been fairly

stable the last 6 months.

After much testing (bloodwork, EKG, MRI, CAT Scan) we have not found a reason.

We have our test kit for the genetic bloodwork and will be doing that soon.

is still learning to read well, but is advanced a year above grade

level in math. He loves to do his reading lessons and wants very much to be an

independent reader!

We know the alphabet in sign language and a few other signs. We rarely use it.

He is a happy, outgoing, social, kind, and spiritual little boy and a great

brother to his 4 siblings. We are so very lucky to have him in our family. I

often say that everyone should have a " Brother Ben! "

My own little survey...

> Ok, that survey gots me thinking....

My son, Dontae, is 2 years 5 months old. He has a bilateral sensorineural

severe / profound loss and was born with this loss.

> Lost hearing in infant/toddler years for a known reason?

> What is the reason?

>

> Lost hearing in infant/toddler years for NO known reason?

Dontae has 2 hearing aids (Phonak Novo Forte E4) and a Microlink MLX FM

System.

He is probably a candidate for the CI but we have decided not to pursue it

at this time.

> Will get the implant?

>

> Can sign?

Dontae signs Exact English. He has a pretty good amount of signs at this

point, at least 100 signs.

> can speak?

Dontae is learning to speak, he reads lips better than he listens with his

equipment.
