Guest guest
> has been since birth? Probably. He wasn't diagnosed till 1 1/2, but as early as 6 months we noticed signs that he had a hearing problem. > Lost hearing in infant/toddler years for NO known reason? Again, yes. Our son's hearing loss has been progressive and his first deterioration was near the end of his toddler years. > has Cochlear Implant? Yes. Our son received his CI when he was 12 (he's now 15) and he loves it! > Can sign? For some reason, our son has always had a strong dislike of sign language, but has shown a slight interest in it since he got his CI. He's taken 2 sign language classes and he seems to have a problem retaining the signs he's learns. > can speak? As someone else mentioned, speaking is no problem for him, shutting him up is another matter. ;-) He speaks so well that he was interviewed for a local TV Segment on Cochlear Implants that aired recently. He does have some slight slurring to his speech, but that's because he wears a retainer and is not due to his hearing loss. -Kay

Guest guest
Of the HI children here who... has been since birth? YES, AS FAR AS WE KNOW Lost hearing in infant/toddler years for a known reason? What is the reason? Lost hearing in infant/toddler years for NO known reason? WE DO NOT KNOW THE REASON FOR ALEX'S HEARING LOSS, BUT THEY ARE ASSUMING IT'S GENETIC. SHE DID NOT TEST POSITIVE FOR CONNEXIN 26, BUT IT COULD BE ONE OF THE GENES THEY HAVEN'T IDENTIFIED YET. WE HAVE NO HISTORY OF HEARING LOSS IN OUR FAMILIES. has Cochlear Implant? NO Will get the implant? NO, AS ALEX HAS A MODERATE LOSS. Can sign? NO can speak? YES - ALEX IS 19 MONTHS OLD AND HAS A VOCAB OF ABOUT 60 WORDS. SHE CAN EVEN ACCURATELY HUM 6 SONGS WHICH WE ARE VERY PROUD OF! I think this will help me know you all better. Thanks for your time. OH..my answers (3.3 = mod-severe bi-laterally) lost his hearing this year for no known reason as of yet. I believe there was some neglect issues b/c the pediatriction (ours was on maternity leave) didn't refer to an ENT...four months/ 5 rounds of antibiotics with a double ear infection. He speaks above his age level according to the speech therapist. Plan on keeping it that way! Thanks again! All messages posted to this list are private and confidential.
