frustration at eating out

I don't like to eat out at new places since I am n ot familiar with the menu and

I am afraid the food will be too fattening or too greasy or too whatever.

Well last night I went out with friends and they really wanted to go to this

place I haven't been to.

I ordered a safe dish: half chicken with string beans and potatoes.

it was a total frustration. The restaurant dimmed the lights so much that you

could barely see your food and that was a turn off.I couldnt see the potatos to

see how they were and not seeing my food was a big problem for me.

The girls wanted their string french fries as appetizer and I did have some. Now

I hate myself for eating french fries.

The chicken was not all white and I didnt like it.I was hungry though as it was

already past my dinner time.

I ate most of the chicken (a wing and dark meat which are the parts I hate) and

most of the beans but I had no interest in the potatoes as they were carbs and I

couldnt see how they were cooked.

I got home totally frustrated with my dinner and from 9:45 to 11:30, all I

wanted was to eat.

I made so many trips to the fridge.I opened it and then told myself: You are not

hungry, yoiu just want to eat.

I did have an apple and I started eating a little piece of a chocolate bar. I

chewed it and spit it out.

I hate dealing with eating out with experiences like this.

Hi : Maybe I should have asked different questions. I asked whether you

had read the IE book, because some of your comments made me wonder whether you

had legalized food or whether you were still choosing food according to fat

grams or calories or whatever. I wonder what you believe makes a food 'too

fattening'. Do you believe certain foods per se, rather than the quantity you

eat, will make you gain weight?

I understand your desire to get exactly what you order in a restaurant. I have 7

food allergy restrictions. One bite of a food allergen will give me excruciating

cramping intestinal pain for 1-2 weeks, depending on the food. I usually give

the server my allergy alert card and send food back if I have any doubts about

the preparation. However, I don't worry about whether a nonallergenic food is

'fattening', because I know my body's hunger/fullness signals will tell me how

much to eat. In fact I prefer some fat in meals, because I know fats make me

feel unhungry longer after eating.

I think I understand what you mean. I know when I eat out, I look

forward to getting something "special" and it's hard to deal with when

it's not what you're hoping for or expecting. It's one reason I like

to go to the same restaurants and usually order the same thing--that

way I can look forward to it and still know I'm going to like it. It's

ironic, but I'm a compulsive eater and at the same time when I'm not

being compulsive I'm really very picky about food.

But what happened last night is not really about what to pick to eat

but not being able to stay in control. The lightning really affected me.

Not being able to clearly see my food bothered me.

The fact that the parts of chicken were not white did bother me too.

I also have a hard time staying in control in restaurants because I think the

atmosphere tends to be overstimulating (music, weird lighting, lots of people

around)and lends itself to overeating.

Were you hungry when you arrived? I have a difficult time figuring out what I

want if I'm not hungry, and I can't stop when I'm full because it take that's

stuffed feelings for me to notice how I'm filling up.

Sometimes if I feel out of control, it helps to excuse myself to the bathroom to

take some deep breaths and compose myself, hopefully the bathroom is a little

calmer.

Hope this helps.
