I know this sounds like I'm oversimplifying things, but I'd just basically reaffirm my right to the fish and chips and cookies, and then when the other thoughts, like list of foods eaten, or cals, come to mind I'd shout a big "STOP". And then just forget about it. That's what I've done. When dieting I'd count calories, without exaggerating, about 3 or more times per hour! Now, just once in a while, I catch myself wanting to add up cals, and I just say to myself, "STOP"! And I just don't add them up and I forget about it.

And in place of the need to consider foods eaten, I'd focus instead on how I did in eating consciously and noticing my level of fullness; am I not full yet, just now full, comfortably satiated? And remember one day of eating won't make or break you; it's really the balance overall that matters so it's A-o.k. to have the fish and chips and cookies, cause another time you'll probably have something lighter just because it's what you want.

Hope this helps a bit.

Although I’ve thought I’d done a good job of legalizing food it dawned on me tonight that I had not because I found myself with a need to justify or rationalize what I was eating to myself.

I think you're being unnecessarily hard on yourself, Jon, when you say you thought you were doing a good job about legalizing food because overall you probably are. Let's not forget that IE is a process and that sometimes there's a curve on the journey. But it sounds like those darn Food Police found an opportunity to throw you a curve. There is no need for you to justify your food choices to these voices! Like Laurie is suggesting, tell those voices NO AND SHUT UP, you do not have to nor will you justify your food choices!! Hopefully, they'll move on!
