Hi, Deb,

You may have an allergy or slight intolerance to wheat products. I certainly do, so have to moderate how much of them I eat to keep from having that bloated feeling. I'm not always successful, because it seems to me that some bready products I can eat with impunity, while others I can barely eat any at all without feeling bloated or having other digestive upsets later on (not wanting to give "too much information!" here).

I seem to have less tolerance for white rather than whole grain flour, and I also have a lower tolerance for certain combinations with bready things. For example, I can eat whole grain pancakes with fruit and their syrup, no butter, but if I add maple syrup or butter, I get ill. Lots of times, too, if I eat meat protein with anything wheaty, whole grain or not, I get indigestion.

In short, I think it's a highly individualized thing, and you'll need to experiment with types of foods and quantities to know what does and does not work for you. This morning I was hungry for a savory chive and cheddar cheese scone I bought the other day at Whole Foods, but the one I'd already eaten didn't agree that well with me, so I decided I'd rather not have it even though it appealed to me. I'd identify this now as taste hunger, since my body wouldn't have wanted it in a half hour.

Staying very aware of how foods affect you is crucial, and you're doing that. You can then make decisions based on that information. You can, in fact, sometimes decide you want to eat something despite the fact that it later won't agree. I try not to do that too often, though, because it seems disrespectful to my own body.

There are some wheat-free (and gluten-free) mixes out there, and the ones I've tried are pretty tasty and don't disagree with me at all. I like the "Pamela's" brand. They have a pancake and general baking mix (one product that makes various things, including biscuits and cookies) and also a chocolate chunk cookie mix that is excellent, and other products I've not tried. I've found them at some Whole Foods and also Sunset Foods, which is around here in the midwest and kind of a cross between Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.

I hope this helps!

Stomach hunger wants bread but it doesn't "sit" well after....

So here's one for you ... I'm looking forward to any help/comments you can offer.

I've been eating intuitively for about 3 weeks now... and feel like I've come home... it's great and I love it. Food is crazy delicious (who knew???) and I'm starting to get a pretty good handle on my hunger and satisfied/full signals. I'm currently working on my past trigger foods using different methods, but mostly journaling out emotions and "sitting with the feelings". I'm not crazy about that part but it has worked on my ice cream issue ... now I can have it in the house and enjoy it when I want without going nuts, so things are moving along ... slowly but well.

The thing I'm having trouble with now is that quite often I find that when I'm hungry I'm wanting breads or things like pancakes... that sort of stuff. I used to stay away from them in the past because I thought they put weight on me faster. Of course, now that there's no bad foods, that's what comes up when I'm hungry... especially for breakfast. The problem is that after I eat it to my full number, that is about a 5 .. ie I'm starting to feel satisfied and hunger is definately gone, I get this very bloated feeling after. The bloating goes away after a couple of hours or so. All the other times that I eat to my 5 level, I come away feeling great and actually energized.

So what do you all think? Should I avoid these types of food or do I need to "get used" to them again? I'd hate to feel that whole "restrictive" thing again, but well, ...I'm confused!

Happens to me sometimes. I think it's just the delay in feeling full. (You

know how they say with diets that it takes 20 minutes for your body to register

fullness). Carbs, in particular, seem to kind of keep expanding when they hit

your stomach. So you stop at a five, but once they've expanded, now you're at a

6 or 7. Not surprising. You might want to try stopping at 4 and waiting 20 or

30 minutes to see how you feel. And if you're still hungry, you can have more.
