Guest guest
does this take into consideration the health care reform act that the republicans are bound to either repeal outright or to water down? Medicare and plans for US diabetics Sorry to non-US members! This topic won't be of any benefit to you. This is the 4th year I think, that I've discussed with my agent, and changed my Medicare plan, and in particular, my part-D or prescription drug plan. I thought I'd post this as a reminder, but also to trigger some discussion in case it might be helpful. The plans change every year, so if you haven't re-examined your plan, you'll want to do that. And, my agent tells me, put your seat belts on, because next year will see even more changes! I will be meeting with my agent some time in the coming weeks (we have until December 31) and this year, I may be looking at a Medicare 0 premium plan, but adding separate policies for both hospitalization and cancer coverage. She tells me, it looks like I can do this, with the 0 premium plan, for less money, and get a whole lot more coverage. But that doesn't mean you will. This is why you need to, IMO, sit with a professional who knows insurance, and specifically, the Medicare program, and go through different scenarios. It takes some time, but it may be well worth it. If you have some helpful tips or advice, please pass it on to us! Guest guest
I'm not sure how the health reform affects these plans. I put great stock in my agent who works diligently to stay abreast of all the changes in the Medicare system. Guest guest
I should have also mentioned that when I say " 0 premium " plans, this has nothing to do with the monthly Medicare premium that comes out of your SSDI check. The 0 premium plans refer to advantage plans, I believe they're called. And it's these plans that are so confusing and offer such a wide range of options and costs. Guest guest
Dave, Good advice indeed. I am currently with Humana and I think my agent has fallen off the face of the world. (LOLLOLLOL) I plant to hit Humana hot and heavy next week. I definitely need to make some changes in my prescription coverage as the cost of some antibiotics are truly staggering. Guest guest
And most are aware, but don't run prescriptions through your part-d insurance if you can get the generic at Wal-Mart or Costco or K-Mart, or a few other places. I'm on quite a few meds, but only run a couple meds through the insurance. Sadly, 2 are insulin prescriptions that have no generic. My problem is that one of my meds, which does happen to be a generic, is still costly because it isn't a common drug (it's an anti-seizure med for my Epilepsy). And I just can't seem to stay under the " donut hole " which is where coverage ends, until you get to the other side. But that's such a high number, I don't ever get there. Guest guest
Dave How did you find an agent? Last year when I signed up for Medicare and a Part D plan for the first time, I just called 1-800-medicare and got help over the phone. But a personal agent would probably do a much bettter job for me and make sure I understand everything thoroughly. Guest guest
I found my agent via word of mouth. I believe she worked with some people at my in-laws church, and I was given her number. I don't know what to tell you, other than to ask around. Personal referrals are usually the best, but you could just call some agents out of the phone book and ask them if they are well acquainted with Medicare. Then use your best judgment. Guest guest
Starting this year and changing each additional year until the full reform is in place there is a change in the part d coverage. If one doesn't use a medicare advantage plan which covers medication one must also have a part d plan to do it. This year the infamous doughnut hole which is a part of part d plans grows smaller and does so each year until it disappears. Guest guest
While blind people under 65 can qualify for the advantage plans it is very difficult to get affordable supplemental insurance coverage that covers the 20% deductible when you are under 65. Guest guest
You're right. And thankfully, at least for strips and meters, most of the suppliers will not charge for the 20% and claim it as a write off. But I've discovered that you need to ask for them to do this, or tell them you'll find a supplier who will not charge for the 20%. This is perfectly legit. Typical government stuff!
