Guest guest
Most vegetables are carb free. There are exceptions, such as carrots, peas, and lima beans. There are a few others probably, but in general, you can eat to your heart's content with vegetables and not have to count carbs! Now, you say you make what sounds like a very low carb dressing. This is very good. Many salad dressings make an otherwise healthy garden salad as bad as eating a couple slices of bread. As far as eating hamburgers, while I'm not suggesting you indulge, next time you feel the urge, throw out the roll, and don't smother the burger with dressings such as catsup and mayo and all. And, yes, pinto beans, and other similar beans are very high in carbs. They can be a healthy part of a meal plan because of their protein and fiber content, but you need to allow for the carbs. -- Weather conditions on 3/23/2011 7:48:43 AM in Lancaster, Pennsylvania Overcast, Mist 35°F Wind:E-090° at 7mph Join the BARD Talk list: bardtalk-subscribe Visit the BARD Talk web site: http://www.bardtalk.com Created by Weather Signature v1.32 . http://www.weathersig.com COUNTING CARBS IN A SALAD? I DO BETTER WITH HEALTH AND OVER ALL FEELING WELL WHEN EATING A SALAD A DAY. BUT IF YOU HAD LOTS OF FINE VEGGIES TO A SALAD LIKE LETIS, CUCUMBER, ONION, PEPPERS, MUSHROOMS, TOMATOES, CABBAGE, SPINACH, SUN FLOUR SEEDS AND THE SUCH. DO YOU HAVE TO COUNT THE CARBS IN EACH VEGGIE AS YOU MAKE THE SALAD? SINCE MY WIFE IS AS WELL A TYPE 2 DIABETIC WE MAKE A BIG SALAD FOR DINNER AND BOTH EAT MAYBE 2 BOWLS BEFORE IT IS DONE. I KNOW MOST VEGGIES ARE LOW IN CARBS, BUT IS IT OK TO NOT WORRY WITH THE CARBS IN THE WHOLE SALAD OR DO I NEED TO KNOW FOR CERTAIN? ALSO NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BREAD FROM THE HEALTH FOOD STORE THAT IS MADE FROM WHOLE GRAIN. I DID READ SOME WHERE THAT OUR BODY CAN'T BREAK DOWN A WHOLE GRAIN AND THERE FOR IT CAN'T RAISE THE SUGAR LEVEL BECAUSE IT IS A WHOLE GRAIN. IS THIS TRUE OR SHOULD I EVEN STAY AWAY FROM EVEN WHOLE GRAIN BREADS? I NEVER EAT MORE THEN ONE SLICE A DAY AND THAT IS AT BREAKFAST. USE OLIVE OIL TO COOK MY EGG AND NOT BUTTER. DON'T USE DRESSING ON A SALAD, BUT DO MAKE MY OWN MIXTURE OF GARLIC, SALT AND JUST A LITTLE, OLIVE OIL AND LIMÓN JUICE ALL MIXED UP TOGETHER. I LOVE SALADS AND ALWAYS HAVE. THE PROBLEM WITH ME IS I ALSO LIKE JUNK AND HAMBURGERS AND THE SUCH. HARD TO GO OUT TO EAT ANY MEAL AND NOT SLIP AND EAT A THING YOU SHOULDN'T. MOSTLY I STAY OUT OF RESTAURANTS BECAUSE IT IS TO EASY TO SLIP AND BE BAD. BEING A TYPE 2 AS I AM MEANS MY SUGAR GOES UP AND I CAN'T BRING IT DOWN WITH OUT A SHOT. SO I GOT TO LIVE WITH IT UNTIL IT DROPS ON IT'S OWN MANY HOURS LATER. I GOT THE CARB COUNTER THAT WAS PUT OUT ON THE LIST MANY YEARS AGO BY DEAN MASTER'S AND I USE IT A LOT TO HELP ME COUNT MY CARBS PER DAY. I LOVE PINTO BEANS, BUT EVER TOOK A LOOK AT HOW MANY CARBS ARE IN ONLY ONE HALF OF A CUP OF PINTO BEANS? I'VE BEEN EATING BEANS ALL MY LIFE. WE WHO LIVE IN THE SOUTH WERE RAISED ON BEANS, CORN BREAD AND FRIED POTATOES. WELL GAVE UP POTATOES AND CORN BREAD, BUT BEANS? I KNOW WHAT TO EAT AND WHAT TO STAY CLEAR OF. THE BIGGEST PROBLEM I GOT IS STAYING AWAY FROM THOSE THINGS THAT I'M AROUND THAT EVERY ONE ELSE IS HAVING AND I WON'T MY SHARE. WHY IS IT THAT FOLKS WHO JUST FOUND OUT THEY ARE DIABETIC AND FOR THE FIRST 3 YEARS TO 6 YEARS CAN EAT ANYTHING THEY WISH AND THERE A1C NEVER GOES ABOVE 7? THIS JUST DOESN'T SEEM FAIR. SOME DIABETICS I KNOW CAN EAT TWICE THE CARBS IN A DAY THAT I CAN AND THEY GOT GRATE CONTROL. I WORRY OVER MY IN TAKE PER DAY OF CARBS AND STILL I GOT TO FIGHT DAILY TO STAY IN A SAFE RANGE. THEY COUNT NOTHING AND DO FINE WHEN IT IS TIME FOR THERE 90 DAY CHECK UP. I'M HAPPY FOR THEM AND PISSED OFF AT THEM AT THE SAME TIME. BUT I KNOW HOW TO DO IT RIGHT AND I WILL GET BACK ON TRACK. I SUPPOSE I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO HAS FELL IN TO BAD HABITS OF THE PAST AND LOST CONTROL FOR A WHILE. THE DIFFERENCE IS THOSE WHO FIGURE OUT THERE MISTAKE AND DO SOME THING ABOUT IT. Guest guest
If you and your wife eat huge amount of salad, yes, you do need to count the carbs in each thing put in your salad. The reason is because a small amount of these things may not add up to much, but more than the recommended amount (on Dean’s list) adds up to more calories. Eat a recommended amount of salad, but add eggs to it or chicken breast (not fried or not cooked with the skin). The only way to know about bread, grain bread or not, is to have someone read you the amount of calories per slice-and this does not mean the net calories. Net calories is something dreamed up by the food industry to make us feel better. Your note indicates you are already bargaining with us about carbs “I only eat one piece a day”. That means you are making excuseless for your self about eating carbs. The end of you note shows you know what to do, but are trying to bargain your way out of it. We all do that. I tell myself “that candy orange slice is really small” and don’t have my husband read the calories on the label. We all do that once in a while, but doing it daily is dangerous. Guest guest
OhMark,I forgot to tell you about a spii I use called “17 spices”. It is just tat, 17 diffract spices, not overloaded with pepper as Mrs. Dash is and very goo with no salt added. I have only been able to find it at Smart & Final, which I don’t know if you have that sore near you. I have not looked it up on the internet, so you might want to try that. _____ From: blind-diabetics [mailto:blind-diabetics ] On Behalf Of Mark Ruth Sent: Wednesday, March 23, 2011 2:45 AM To: blind diabetics Subject: COUNTING CARBS IN A SALAD?
