Harry, I've always been unclear about calories. The percentages you mentioned

concerning the 3 principle foods (carbohydrate, protein, and fat) was helpful,

but then you mention " excess glucose calories, " and that added to my confusion.

So, Harry the scientist and chemist (smile>, how about a little more explanation

about calories!

Every gram of food you consume is converted by your liver into glucose.

Glucose is the simplest organic sugar there is, and it is the only sugar

utilized by each cell in your body for energy. Pure glucose is tasteless or at

least it was when I took organic chemistrry. Each food source, carbohydrate,

protein and fat produces energy in the form of calories. Each food converts a

single gram into caloric energy as noted below. carbohydrates is converted at

the rate of 100% into glucose at the conversion factor of 4 calories per gram.

protein is converted into calories at the rate of 50-60% at the factor of 4

calories per gram.

fat is converted into calories at the rate of 10% to yield 9 calories per

gram.

All excess glucose calories not used by the body is converted to fat with the

help of insulin, the storage hormone.

There are several metabolism pathways, and I do not know their names, but the

MRT (mediators release test) identifies several of them. This test is supposed

to identify whether or not you have a food allergy or food sensitivity like

lactose or gluten. Maybe a dietician can comment on this message or correct any

mistakes I have made here.

By excess calories, I am pretty sure he meant the glucose that your body

does not need for energy. That then gets converted to fat.

Okay Dave, You know how I like formulas and rules of thumb, so here is one. For

each pound of body it takes 10 calories to maintain that body weight. If you

weigh 200 pounds it would take 200 times 10 equals 2000 calories for you to

maintain a body weight of 200 pounds.

It takes 3500 calories to equal one pound. Exdess calories not used by the body

is converted to fat by the use of Insulin, the storage hormone. So if you weigh

200 pounds it would take 2000 calories for you to maintain that weight. If

instead you consumed 2350 calories then you would convert the excess glucose to

fat, or you would gain one poune. If on the other hand if you only consumed

1650 calories, you would loose one pound. Most people miscalculate the calories

by not knowing that 28 grams of anything makes an ounce, and they don't know how

to figure grams of carbs, grams of progein and grams of fat into calories.

Hth, Harry

Time prevents all things from happening at once.

Every gram of food you consume is converted by your liver into glucose.

Glucose is the simplest organic sugar there is, and it is the only sugar

utilized by each cell in your body for energy. Pure glucose is tasteless or

at least it was when I took organic chemistrry. Each food source,

carbohydrate, protein and fat produces energy in the form of calories. Each

food converts a single gram into caloric energy as noted below.

carbohydrates is converted at the rate of 100% into glucose at the

conversion factor of 4 calories per gram.

protein is converted into calories at the rate of 50-60% at the factor of 4

calories per gram.

fat is converted into calories at the rate of 10% to yield 9 calories per

gram.

All excess glucose calories not used by the body is converted to fat with

the help of insulin, the storage hormone.

There are several metabolism pathways, and I do not know their names, but

the MRT (mediators release test) identifies several of them. This test is

supposed to identify whether or not you have a food allergy or food

sensitivity like lactose or gluten. Maybe a dietician can comment on this

message or correct any mistakes I have made here.

Nurse Pat,

Geez, I have not heard that since my Freshman college chemistry course.

(LOLLOLLOLLOL)

I think it is something like a calorie represents the amount of energy

needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water one degreeC?

Holy Moly, that poor old brain storage cell had moss on it. (LOLLOLLOL)

Glucose is the most simple of the carbs. So one gram of glucose is equal to

4 calories. I have forgotten the exact definition of a calories

, but I believe it is something like " one calories will burn enough to

raise the temperature a certain amount of degrees.

It appears to be a straight line linear relationship. But what do I know. I

doubt all of my data, and this is the reason I check it over until I get the

same results at least three times in a row.
