It was almost drowned out by the financial news last week,

but there was a highly publicized meeting at FDA on Tuesday to discuss whether

BPA, a estrogen-like chemical in plastics, is dangerous when it is used in baby

bottles and as a lining in beverage cans and canned foods.

The safety of BPA is important because government studies

show that 93% of us have BPA In our bodies at any given time. I testified

about the need to protect our families, focusing on the fact that FDA was

rushing to judgment to assure consumers that BPA in food containers was safe,

when the research is inconclusive but clearly pointing in the opposite

direction. Many scientists and public health experts testified in

agreement.

In addition, new research was reported showing that adults

with higher levels of BPA in their bodies were more likely to have heart

disease or diabetes. (Age, weight, etc was statistically controlled.)

Wouldn¢t it be amazing if a significant part of the US diabetes

epidemic was related to the food containers

rather than the food we eat?
