Banning trigger foods?

Hi, McKella,

I haven't actually banned anything, but after having noticed that too much fat or too much sugar makes me feel sort of sick, I try to be all that much more conscious when I am eating them. I find I go unconscious really fast with sugar, and so I choose to eat it (when I have the choice) in single-portion units, since the end of the unit gives me a chance to remember to check in with how the food is making me feel. Of course that's not always possible, like at a party. In those cases, I find it helpful to sit down and check in with myself before the event, to imagine what sorts of things could be there that I could choose to eat, and to visualize ahead of time, seeing myself eating consciously and stopping when my body's had enough. If this were a perfect world, that would work 100% of the time. It doesn't, but even if I overeat, I just wait until the next time I'm hungry to eat again. Things usually adjust out in a few days.

I hope this helps!

All best,

Laurie

>>>I read a lot of intuitive eating blogs and find them very helpful, but I notice that some people have banned trigger foods, such as sugar or peanut butter. I understand avoiding a food if you have an allergy or intolerance or if it just makes you feel yucky, but is banning trigger foods a good idea, or would it just perpetuate the diet mentality? I don't know.

I notice that when I eat sugar or cheesy stuff, I have a hard time stopping and I usually feel really yucky. I've thought about avoiding them, but of course as soon as something is "off limits", it gets that much more appealing, and then I go to a party or something and eat several servings of dessert and a piece of cheese lasagna.

I also have ethical reasons for wanting to avoid dairy, but I worry that now may not be the best time to cut it out because the diet brain might come back.

Thoughts, anyone? Has anyone had this problem?<<<
