yes groups like 12-step groups have helped me to learn some of the social skills

i lacked growing up.. and meeting like -minded people there have led to lasting

friendships and opportunities for social activities.  it is a learning process,

one day at a time.ann

The trauma I've suffered at my borderline parents hands has left a huge

hole

in my ability to feel safe interacting with other people. My resulting

avoidance of personal interactions has left my social skills somewhat

stunted. I'm still not a pro at setting boundaries, and I some times miss

hints when other people set boundaries. I feel really shitty when I cross

boundaries, so I try to maintain an emotional distance from people so I

don't accidentally cross them. This leaves me feeling isolated.

I feel like if I had a surrogate family, I could pick these skills up.

Don't get me wrong, therapy is working well for me, but I really want to

get some hands on experience interacting with people in a safe and loving

environment, so I can learn the social skills necessary to identify good

people to be around, and to know how interact with them.

I'm sometimes think a survivor of BPD parent group therapy coupled with a

social activity would do the trick. Like cooking dinner together, or going

to a park, etc.... With a therapist or two to help make sure that we that

we keep the experience positive and constructive.

Any one have any thoughts on this?

I like the 12 step idea, but another thought - what are you passionate

about? Get involved in it and you will meet tons of friends.

As for me, I think I'm the opposite, extremely outgoing, friendly,

expressive. . . I always have a million projects and I volunteer for

everything. Can you say parentified? And can you say people pleaser? Etc. .

.. I often wonder how much of my personality is a flea and how much of it is

me in there.
