I have this problem, too, but I think it's something you just have to

play around with. Sometimes I'll make a pot of tea, just to keep my

hands busy, or start doing puzzles, etc. As an ex-smoker, doing

something with my hands tends to alleviate the feeling something should

be in my mouth. Physical activity works, too. You could do hand

weights while watching TV, for instance.

when I am watching TV, reading, etc. How do you cope with this & get past it?

What do I do instead? Do I just have to wait until it feels more normal to not

eat when I'm bored, but not hungry?

Hi Ginger,

I have been dealing with this today as well. I tend to eat in a vacum... noone around, not much to do , channel surfing etc. So today I decided that next Sunday I will start visitng my children or visit friends.. which will be easier now that spring is here. When I am isolated I get bored, frustrated and I find that I am eating before I even realize it and it becomes a frantic munching. Maybe I am trying to fill the lonliness... I don't really know, but I will let you know how next week turns out.

Ginger,

What I do (usually) is tell myself that if I want to eat, I have to turn the tv off while I eat, so that I can eat consciously. If I'm not actually hungry, I won't be motivated enough to turn off the TV. This has helped me to de-couple eating and tv watching.

Hi,

One thing I like to do is cross stitch while watching television, keeps the hands busy and my mind on something else besides food. Sometimes I think if I get the munchies; I'm really just bored with watching TV or what I'm doing at the time, and need to find something a little more stimulating to fill the time.

Sohni, that's a good plan for next Sunday.

Have a good day and a great week!

Abby, that's a great idea. For me, it's reading while I eat -- I've always got a book shoved in my nose.

I will try setting down the book while I eat. I especially love the notion that if I'm reluctant to do so, I'm not really hungry.

Cheers,

Harry

I used to read with every single meal! I totally loved it! It was the ultimate comfort experience. And every diet I went on always used to add as an afterthought, oh, you shouldn't read or watch tv while you eat.

But i felt like -- hey, i'm already torturing myself with a diet! dont make me give up my book, too!but then, once i started IE, one day i was ready. and now i dont even want to read while i eat. i actually ENJOY focusing on my food. it makes eating more interesting.

but it does take one more coping mechanism away... prepare yourself for that, that you may have emotions to face. good luck!abby

Hi,

This might be a little dangerous, but my husband and I find ourselves many times eating dinner during the evening news. But with so much bad news these days, I've discovered it getting easier just to tune the TV out and focus on my food.
