Hi Amie,

Is your thyroid stabilized, or still low? My son has been hypothyroid

since he was 14, so a little over 4 years now. He's on a conventional

medication (synthroid). As long as he's on medication he has no

significant symptoms and has not had a problem with his metabolism or

weight gain (other than when he was growing). If you're not feeling

well, you should speak to your doctor again and possibly see about a

referral to a nutritionist who can help.

Sohni

Hi –

Hope someone can

relate… recently diagnosed with Hashimoto’s

thyroid disease. Good naturopath doctor has been attentive to my needs.

However, my metabolism has tanked – if I am not working out 45 min +

per

day then I gain a pound or two – my weight keeps going up, not down. I

am

adding fat, losing muscle. I am a normally healthy person, not

overweight –

yet.

I am looking into a

special diet to help hypothyroid people lose

weight. Ok – that’s the D-Word right there. I feel a little bit

torn, I want to be eating the right things for my body – but not

restricting

and not feel like the food police are all around. I have successfully

dropped

dairy since I am lactose intolerant – but that seems a bit easier.

Anyone else come to

a happy place with special dietary needs and

IE? I am a little worried about jumping back into counting carb,

calories,

grams etc. I had a last supper moment today – eating salty chips,

because

I know they are NOT allowed. L

Thanks for your help,

Amie

Thanks Sohni -

I am on week 5 of synthroid – still monitoring the dosage

and levels. All other hypo symptoms have been relieved. The dr knows that

the weight gain is my last major issue. She isn’t overly concerned –

maybe I am too concerned.

It may take a few more weeks for your levels to stabilize and then I

think your metabolism should normalize itself. My son started at a

pretty high dose, and then a year or so later had to halve it because

his levels were off again. He's been stable since then. I hope

everything stabilizes for you soon!

Hi, Amie,

I was diagnosed as hypothyroid 8 years ago, and though my thyroid levels on medication are consistently in the normal range, and almost all my other symptoms are gone, it is very hard for me to lose weight, and for many hypothyroid people on medication with now normal levels, this is not at all unusual.

My first doctor told me otherwise--she was sure I'd be down to a size 2 in no time. I was beyond a size two when I was 2 years old (ok, I exaggerate a bit for effect...).That was the doctor whose nurse actually pulled me aside after my third visit and warned me to get away from her, that she was incompetent. I'd just come to that opinion myself, so found another doctor.

Some people who are hypothyroid actually are normal weight, or even underweight. Hard to believe, but true. I know a couple of these people. Not my fate. If hypothyroidism is caught early, you may be better off than I was (undiagnosed I think for decades).

Shomon is the thyroid guru at about.com, and she has several books on hypothyroidism. If you peruse stuff she's written, you'll notice that difficulty in losing weight is a regular fact for many hypothyroid people on medication. Last time I looked (years ago), Shomon was pretty big into a diet mentality, so approach her stuff with caution.

The endocrine system is a complicated thing, and when the thyroid is off, the adrenal gland can try to compensate, so then you can develop problems from an adrenal gland that is overworked--like hair-trigger stress levels, which I suffered for years. Could not understand why I would be reduced to tears if a fried egg yolk broke. Even I knew it made no sense to get so upset over such a thing, but there I was, crying about it. Thank goodness the medication solved that problem!

It's not impossible to lose weight when your thyroid is wonky, but it can be more of a challenge. I try to comfort myself with the fact that having the other symptoms mostly gone is itself a blessing, which it truly is. I had a boatload of them by the time I was diagnosed!

Thank you Laurie. Thyroid levels are normal, but I haven’t

been on the meds long.

Yes, my stress level is also a problem – regularly experiencing

an adrenaline wash from normal traffic events. I know about Shomon, and I

did order her book.

I ‘feel’ like I am not eating very well – long

hours between feeling hungry. Hard to honor your hunger when you don’t

have any. ;) I plan to use ’s diet book as more of a guide. I’m

worried that I will not be able to make progress.
