Hello, My wife was watching Desperate Housewives and a character on it needed a kidney. My wife has diabetes, and said, even if she were not diabetic, she didn't know if she would donate a kidney to a stranger. Now, She has type 2 diabetes. Can she donate a kidney if she chose to? I know diabetics can donate blood, but I have never heard an answer on organ donation. My cornias are still goood, so My docs say I can donate those, but I'm not sure about other organs. Any thoughts? Thanks

Guest guest
I don't know about organ donation, but here in Canada insulin-dependent diabetics are not allowed to donate blood (for fear of them passing out from hypoglycemia). It's very frustrating, as I would donate blood if I could. I would think diabetics could donate organs as long as they are not damaged by the disease, but I could be wrong. Whatever orgnaization is in charge of organ donations would probably be the best place to ask. Jen > > Hello, > > My wife was watching Desperate Housewives and a character on it needed > a kidney. Guest guest
Organs which are not suitable for transplant, are used for study and teaching! Re: Can diabetics donate organs? Guest guest
I asked my friend, the head of the donation procurement here. She says that if you are an unlimited donor (no restrictions) ANYONE can donate anything, even Hep C and soon AIDs. They match them specific to each receiver, i.e., if they already have Hep C, they can get an organ from someone with Hep C and no problem. Now, she says that to donate, you have to die in a facility where you are on life support because they keep you " alive " or out of coronary death while they run tests on everything to see what organs are viable. But even T1s whose organs aren't viable are able to donate bones or skin or corneas, or if there's an organ usable the T1 isn't an automatic deny. It just depends on the viability of the organ. > > Hello, > > My wife was watching Desperate Housewives and a character on it needed a kidney. Guest guest
Hi, Judith, Great information. I'm one who guessed diabetics couldn't donate organs. Thanks for the report. Guest guest
I didn't put it in but maybe someone's interested in what else she said. T1s are highly regarded in the research area because that's how they learn about neuropathy (they can't cut open a leg while alive to see what's happening but can on a donated body) & retinopathy & such. And a T1 who's a donor but can't donate to a living recipient due to organ inviability is again highly regarded for research. So we all benefit from donation whether we receive anything or just the research results. I was surprised by the answer myself; I would have agreed with you that we couldn't donate. > > Hi, Judith, > > Great information. I'm one who guessed diabetics couldn't donate organs.
