Guest guest
Hi Sunny, I just meant that this isn't a diet club, and there are many online diet clubs if the MAIN focus one has is on weight loss. Obviously a main focus on weight can be a trigger. Just as some have triggers with discussion of certain foods being addictive. I'm sorry to be dismissive. Thanks for calling me on that. I think it's not about the weight loss, but about the intensity of discussion. Ciao! > your comments surprised me so i went back to the group > homepage to see if discussing weight was inappropriate chat for > this group. From the homepage it does seem to be appropriate to > discuss the " Intuitive Eating method of weight loss " . I know it's > hard to read emotion/intent in email so my surprise came from what > i read in your post as a dismissive invitation to those concerned > with weight to go find another group. Hopefully thats not how it > was meant at all. I hope this group is tolerant and inclusive of > all who want to heal thier relationship with food no matter what > their triggers or where they come from in thier journey. > > Sunny > > Sent from my iTouch >
Guest guest
I found this group on the Health At Every Size website. My assumption because it is linked on that site, is that this would be an IE group that focuses on health of the mind, health of the body and questions the mass media hysteria that overly and incorrectly links weight to health... AND for me most importantly, links weight to self worth, value, respect and beauty. When there becomes too much diet talk where the focus is on weight it is extremely hard to have those conversations in a way that does not oppress people who are fat. (I do not like to use the term overweight...because...over...which weight? That is also a long debate but for another day). Our society at large has only one "standard conversation" about weight and it infuses everything with a vigor not unlike the communist witchhunts of the 1950s without much merit or true scientific rigor. Because we are living in this paradigm I think it is more imperative that we have a safe space in this group where weight is not a major compnant of our conversation... a safe space. Because I found this group through the Heath At Every Size website, I assumed that was a given for this group but I see that that is not particularly so... But it can affect people like all my thin friends who pinch their skin and moan about how fat they are... it affects me, while not directed to ME per se... it is also commentary about my body and its "inappropriate nature". Conversations in this space once focused on weight loss can easily, so easily take on a similar vernacular. That does not mean people are not allowed to talk about weight loss... but it is so closely linked to judgements on weight, size, worth... it is so easy to start slipping down the path back into old habits that do NOT work and never will, or it does but for only a little while. IE to me is not about losing weight, it is adapting to a healthier relationship to food, to my body and to body diversity in a way that honors who I am in the moment that I am. Being present minded, listening to my body and loving her, not telling her she is a less perfect version of herself. I for one am not sure weight loss is truly a companion theme with IE. I think we could all be better off with talking about health, fitness, exersize how do we get it? What works for us? What makes us feel good? How do people start fitness after a long break, How do we honor our bodies in this way? How do we monitor our bodies and what do we do when we want to eat emotionally but our bodies are satisfied? Where does that come from? How do we deal with that? There's a deeper conversation here that if it may lead to loss for some great, but to me that is anecdotal rather than the main show.Jenna

Guest guest
Well said Jenna! Thank you for expressing your thoughts so well. I really connected to what you said, " IE to me is not about losing weight, it is adapting to a healthier relationship to food, to my body and to body diversity in a way that honors who I am in the moment that I am. " I feel very vulnerable when I read references to the diet mentality, e.g. weight loss/gain. I find it triggers the anxiety that leads me back to those powerful diet/weight loss thoughts, which leads me astray from IE. You also said " I think it is more imperative that we have a safe space in this group where weight is not a major component of our conversation... a safe space. " This group has been that " safe space " for me and I really hope it continues to be so.
