Guest guest
HI PH!! Cortef and hydrocortisone cream are both a source of bio-identical cortisol, as far as I know. I learned this from the Adrenal group. I buy my hydrocortisone cream OTC. It's very cheap. However, I have not needed to use it in quite some time. 1/4 tsp is equal to about 10 mg of hydrocortisone. The body has an output of about 20 mg a day. So, dosing could go something like 1/4 tsp in the AM, 1/8 at noon, and another 1/8 tsp in the afternoon. Licorice root extract is another great supplement to use as a booster for the adrenals. It helps maintain or extend the life of cortisol in your body. This would only make sense for those who have low cortisol, not excess cortisol, of course. It's a good idea to watch your blood pressure while on it, because it can affect those with high blood pressure. So, how are you feeling? Do you have concerns about having low adrenal function? I do not remember reading about other women who are using only cortef and progesterone. The usual hormones include the thyroid, adrenal and then estrogen/progesterone. Dr. Lee was the one who wrote books about using progesterone during perimenopause, and I read his books and believed them. However, after reading Dr. Vliet's book on hormones, I have come to believe, like she does, that Dr. Lee placed too much emphasis on progesterone and not enough on the use of bio-identical estrogen. I can verify that it is only with the addition of the estrogen that I have felt better....not the progesterone! Regarding the niacin, I've used the flushing kind, where I get all red and itchy temporarily. It is annoying, but well, it's the kind I have so it's the kind I use! Which flushes were you referring to...liver flushes? I did not use niacin for liver flushes. I just used niacin as a supplement to open up the capillaries more and to get that B vitamin. AH, which reminds me....I need to go take my cayenne! Thanks for the well wishes on my exam next week. I need them...this professor is a tough one. Thanks and God Bless! Guest guest
Hi Patty, Thanks for the info. I was referring to a niacin flush. I was going to do one, but then read that one should be cautious w/ doing them if they have glaucoma. So, I may hold off. I was feeling pretty good after fasting for 5 1/2 days on cucumber and celery juice. Then I went back to food (and also my period started) so I don't know if it's hormonal or if it's food allergies or what. Basically I have a headache most of the day and my eye muscles constantly feel strained. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what is wrong, but it feels like " something is missing. " My vision is clear now and my brain is working better, but it still feels like something is off. For this reason, I spend a lot of time at home and I am also soooo fatigued. Sometimes it's a feeling of congestion in my whole head. How long did you take hydrocortisone? Didn't only take progesterone w/o the estrogen? Thanks! Guest guest
PH, I tried the cortisone for a short period of time only, and also used Isocort, after I received my saliva test results back that showed adrenal fatigue. I also used the herbal supplements. I can't remember how long I tried it...not long though, I remember, because that was when I was going through some perimenopause symptoms as well, and had decided that the estrogen replacement was probably more important, given my symptoms and the immediate effect I felt with estrogen replacement. I had not noticed as much of an effect with the hydrocortisone. I don't remember about and what she used...I thought you meant cortef with progesterone, not just progesterone alone. I'm sure there have been a number of women who have used progesterone alone. I know of one friend here in Vegas who used it with great results. She was more than likely very estrogen dominant. I always felt worse around my period when I was very sick. It was because of that drop in hormones, I believe. I know what you mean about congestion in the head...I remember that well. Keep working through all this...I know you will find the answers you need, just like I did. Everything eventually all fell into place, as I researched and tried various avenues to healing that were safe and sane. It will for you too.
