Guest guest
Thanks ! So, beans, squash and pineapple are ok? Like I said, I forget which foods are high oxalate, phenol, etc, but on my list that eliminates them all, I thought these were frowned upon. Also, I think tahini is on one of those lists to eliminate which stinks b/c my girls LOVE hummus. I can probably just find a recipe without the tahini. I do the same thing with meal planning. There are always lists all over the fridge. I plan out every meal for the week, always shop on the same day, and only buy the ingredients for our meals - it has actually saved us some money! Thanks for all the great info. I think I need to buy a juicer! - Kirk-To: mb12 valtrex From: laurargoddin@...Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2011 15:52:49 +0000Subject: Re: Low Oxalate/phenol/salicytate dietHi LOL!! Yes, it's possible. It didn't seem to affect them other than, that was all they wanted, and I was going to try to use the bananas in a muffin recipe. I can't now, as all of them are gone... I feel the same!! I would love to eat at a restaurant again... With the Feingold, gf/cf - I am fanatical. With ox's I am a little more lenient, but watch them closely. With soy and corn, I have loosened up a little, but not much. My kids drink pineapple juice (2oz of organic knudson's w/6oz of water) and lemonade. Lemonade is special (as it contains sugar, but it's homemade). Water and Rice Milk (unsweet, Karma brand). My kids have a juicer drink 2x's a day now. I just added golden delicious apples back in (I am trying them). I juice these with carrots. Apparently the malic acid in apples works well with the beta carotene in carrots. Carrots are high ox, so it's a small juicer drink. The second juice is all veg mostly and a couple of fruits like pears, pineapple, lemons and lime. (I tend to use 1 or 2 high ox veg) I use herbs too. For meals, I use eggs, meat, poultry, fish, beans and lentils (we do 2 meatless meal days a week). Things that don't juice well like squash, broccoli, green beans, and fermented veggies (etc.) For snacks, it usually some cracker (rice) with some dipping thing. Lately it's hummus. Watermelon, kiwi, blueberries or some other fruit. I had to try other things like Tempeh. My daughter likes it, my son won't touch it. She gets that like once a month. It's part of my meatless meals. It's hard to get a good round meal plan. I know, it takes planning and persistence, and sometimes, I have been known to make breakfast for dinner, and dinner for breakfast. We do eat bacon (about 1 time a month) and my sister converted a recipe for waffles (gf/cf) and they are to DIE for. I make a blueberry sauce and I use rice whip. I am the master of the one pot meal. I love my crock pot (as it saves me time!!). I spend about 1-2 hours a month planning meals (and days) to incorporate our new diet. It works well because my husband knows what the day is about. I keep my revitapops on hand, and I always have some little snack thing that when I feel like driving thru the drive thru, it gets me thru that mental hell of me just wanting someone else to do the cooking. Then I chew on some L-theanine gum, and take a couple of MB12's and I am back on track. Guest guest
is there a site somewhere that lists fruits and veggies that are low oxalate, non-yeast feeders, low in phenols etc? :-0 I am having a rough time trying to balance what foods are ok for what problems. What about pears? Are those ok? I miss the good old days of thinking I was doing the right thing giving my son whole wheat breads. whole milk, and yogurt and berries. Still over a year later and we are finding out things we juice with are not the best for him either. You ladies should write a book, I would be one of the first to buy it! (I got this idea from and her calendar board...)So, I hear ya. But actually, we aren't starving. I've lost over 40 lbs, I haven't been a size 14 in a long time, and I am almost a 12. I keep my revitapops on hand, and I always have some little snack thing that when I feel like driving thru the drive thru, it gets me thru that mental hell of me just wanting someone else to do the cooking. Then I chew on some L-theanine gum, and take a couple of MB12's and I am back on track. I get exhausted thinking about it...but then I grab a coffee (also high ox) with my rice milk..and think, it's the best I have ever felt. Guest guest
is there a site somewhere that lists fruits and veggies that are low oxalate, non-yeast feeders, low in phenols etc? :-0 I am having a rough time trying to balance what foods are ok for what problems. What about pears? Are those ok? I miss the good old days of thinking I was doing the right thing giving my son whole wheat breads. whole milk, and yogurt and berries. Still over a year later and we are finding out things we juice with are not the best for him either. You ladies should write a book, I would be one of the first to buy it! Guest guest
,Black coffee is not high oxalate. What you put in your coffee is where your oxalate is coming from LOL,I think my kids still eat a pretty rounded diet, they just can't have whatever they see in unspecified quantity. Bananas are ok on LOD, just can't let them have two a day. I tell my kids they can have 1/2 a large banana. I might let them eat one each if they have some calcium with it (to bind the oxalates hopefully) We are GF, have very limited casein and soy exposures, organic corn, eat mostly stage one Feingold (trying to expand now) Probably the biggest headache was trying to find a low oxalate milk and that is why I gave up and let them have very little milk (goat's milk and cheese as I discussed yesterday) I am still not counting every oxalate amt. Some people have it down to exact numbers... I just avoid high stuff, limit medium stuff. That being said I do allow once a week some chocolate and those So Delicious coconut bars that are choc w/ almond covered... who knows the ox on those?! (I considered saving the choc to weigh it LOL) Christel, pineapple juice is high salicylate but for some reason many kids can tolerate it. Not sure why, maybe because bromelain is its own enzyme?? Gosh, I just don't know. Apples are also not FG ST1 approved, but it was one of the first things we tested. Granny were a big no-no (which is too bad b/c I think they have some sort of holistic medicinal use, right?) but we are ok on the golden delicious. , I wouldn't try to do everything at once. Plot out your course. Feingold diet will cost you money (~80-100$ to begin) to get the membership materials. But the very nice part abt this is that the membership materials are 1-a troubleshooting guide/book/recipe book 2-shopping list, over 150 pages of brands/products that are approved, many noting an asterisk to advise HFS or Whole Foods/Specialty store or GF and/or CF for GFCF items, and CS for those items that are approved but have corn syrup, or MSG for those people trying to avoid MSG, or N for nitrates/nitrites (all of these designations not part of the FG main diet but part of the advanced measures some people like us take) 3- a supplements guide, telling you which supps are FG ST1 approved. You can use this guide to compare to the ourkidsasd.com site and determine if an item is also SCD compliant in case you venture into that later. 4-updates all year with additions 5-access to their website area/message board. Feingold was really great in getting some of my ASD kid's behaviors under control. Like, sound hardly bothers her now (she still likes it quite/less-stimulating but not holding her ears as much!) We got the quickest response from this diet... like within a week. You are supposed to let the kid be on the diet about 6 weeks with real results before adding back things one by one to test them. You will know when it's time to test. You don't do LOD all at once like cold turkey. It is completely NOT recommended. As going too low on oxalates will cause a massive dump, pain and regression in your child. You will be very sad :-( So with LOD, you look at the list of high stuff, and just eliminate those things. If you can't get rid of chocolate, you decrease the amt (like, don't give hot cocoa every night, maybe twice a week) So gradually you get better and better at serving low meals. You don't have to learn how to cook on this diet all at once like SCD lol For instance, we are still buying our convenience school snacks. We just avoid the high grains like quinoa, amaranth, etc. Probably the weirdest part about LOD is learning that what we thought was healthy isn't always so for leaky gut. While SCD would have you not buy canned food, LOD says canned cooked carrots are LOW, better for you than fresh/raw or frozen. Gahh. Boiling your veggies is better than steaming. Huh!? ;-) Â LOL!! Yes, it's possible. Yes, it's limited, and therefore, you have to kinda pick your battle of the day. We removed orange juice and bananas. We got the quickest response from this diet... like within a week. Although, my kids saw them in the grocery store (bananas) and I got them. (I got this idea from and her calendar board...) So, I hear ya. Guest guest
Pears used to be considered low oxalate and then they were retested, and now not-so-much (medium)Mangoes are low, but probably feed yeast. http://www.lowoxalate.info has some food lists. They are older so may have info that has been revised (go to yahoo group trying_low_oxalates for updated info, we cannot publish it outside the group b/c some of the research is done by a private company who is very protective of their data!! We don't worry about feeding yeast in my house though we probably should. Well, I try not to let the kids eat carbs all day but I don't always succeed. I just go ahead and give probiotics. I know that doesn't work for everyone though. There are SCD and GAPS people on the LOD list. FYI, low oxalate diet is a constantly evolving diet and it has a steep learning curve. So if you do decide to try it, don't become frustrated about it. I have been doing it over 6 months and still just managing to grasp it all. It's more like counting calories than eliminating foods completely (except almonds, rhubarb, swiss chard, spinach, you probably want to never eat those again LOL well, ok you can probably sneak an almond now and then LOL)  is there a site somewhere that lists fruits and veggies that are low oxalate, non-yeast feeders, low in phenols etc? :-0 I am having a rough time trying to balance what foods are ok for what problems. What about pears? Are those ok?  I miss the good old days of thinking I was doing the right thing giving my son whole wheat breads. whole milk, and yogurt and berries. Still over a year later and we are finding out things we juice with are not the best for him either. You ladies should write a book, I would be one of the first to buy it! I might let them eat one each if they have some calcium with it (to bind the oxalates hopefully) We are GF, have very limited casein and soy exposures, organic corn, eat mostly stage one Feingold (trying to expand now)Probably the biggest headache was trying to find a low oxalate milk and that is why I gave up and let them have very little milk (goat's milk and cheese as I discussed yesterday) I am still not counting every oxalate amt. Some people have it down to exact numbers... I just avoid high stuff, limit medium stuff. That being said I do allow once a week some chocolate and those So Delicious coconut bars that are choc w/ almond covered... who knows the ox on those?! (I considered saving the choc to weigh it LOL)Christel, pineapple juice is high salicylate but for some reason many kids can tolerate it. Not sure why, maybe because bromelain is its own enzyme?? Gosh, I just don't know. Apples are also not FG ST1 approved, but it was one of the first things we tested. Granny were a big no-no (which is too bad b/c I think they have some sort of holistic medicinal use, right?) but we are ok on the golden delicious., I wouldn't try to do everything at once. 4-updates all year with additions 5-access to their website area/message board.Feingold was really great in getting some of my ASD kid's behaviors under control. We just avoid the high grains like quinoa, amaranth, etc.Probably the weirdest part about LOD is learning that what we thought was healthy isn't always so for leaky gut. While SCD would have you not buy canned food, LOD says canned cooked carrots are LOW, better for you than fresh/raw or frozen. Gahh. Boiling your veggies is better than steaming. Huh!? ;-) LOL!! Yes, it's possible. Yes, it's limited, and therefore, you have to kinda pick your battle of the day. We removed orange juice and bananas. Although, my kids saw them in the grocery store (bananas) and I got them. It didn't seem to affect them other than, that was all they wanted, and I was going to try to use the bananas in a muffin recipe. I can't now, as all of them are gone...I feel the same!! I would love to eat at a restaurant again...With the Feingold, gf/cf - I am fanatical. Guest guest
In my opinion and the opinion of Owens who is the researcher / head of the ARI Autism/Oxalate project, if you feel you have leaky gut, you should be on the low oxalate diet. (See lowoxalate.info) Low phenol/salicylate has been recommended for people who have ADHD, autism, tics, etc. (See Feingold.org)If your OAT test comes back high in the oxalic acids, then there is an oxalate issue. BUT says if the OAT oxalic part test comes back ok, that doesn't necessarily mean there's no trouble with it. As a sort of non-scientific test for " do I have oxalate issues, " if you crave high oxalate foods, you probably have issues! One of my favorite pre-diet snacks would be a few clementines with nuts. Probably would exceed 100 mg oxalate in that one " snack. " Â How does one know if your child needs to be on a low oxalate/phenol/salicytate diet? Do the food sensitivity blood tests test for that? > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I really need some help, here. Guest guest
It's crazy that you said this today. I was about to call the dr b/c my low tone, leaky gut daughter (who I have been wanting to try low-ox with) just started showing signs of painful urination. About a year ago, she had blood in her urine 3 different times (trace amounts), but because it cleared up, the dr wasn't worried. I always thought that was weird. Could that have been crystals? She has inflammation/leaky gut/food sensitivities. So, by doing low-ox, can I expect a lot of gut healing? Is it possible that she could heal enough that she could eventually be on a normal diet or is it a diet she'll need to be on forever? I'm going to start with it soon - just giving her a bit more time on the supps we started because she doesn't really seem used to them yet. I also found it interesting that someone said zinc defiency can be a cause of teeth grinding (both girls have low zinc compared to their copper). Both girls grind their teeth, especially when you give them a tight hug (I assume this is sensory seeking?). I am learning so much on this forum. So thank you! - Kirk- To: mb12 valtrex From: bellbaby@...Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2011 22:37:50 -0500Subject: Re: Re: Low Oxalate/phenol/salicytate dietHi PS Oh, painful urination and / or evidence of crystals in the urine, big sign! Guest guest
Zinc and Magnesium were two of the first things I started with my kids. My sons teeth grinding and restless legs cleared up probably within a week. :)Yes, the idea of the LOD is trying to heal the gut permanently. However once you learn about oxalate and go thru the dumping periods, you will likely never look at spinach and almonds the same way again. When I see Dr. Oz or Dr. Mercola promote spinach, I nearly want to vomit. :-)Low Oxalate is a diet you start slowly. TRULY! It makes it one of the easiest diets to start, ant it has a steep learning curve so you just take it slow, it's not like doing GFCF where you just pick a day and jump in. LOL Start by removing the worst offenders. Baby steps on this one!!!  It's crazy that you said this today. "  How does one know if your child needs to be on a low oxalate/phenol/salicytate diet? Do the food sensitivity blood tests test for that? > > > > > > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > > > > I really need some help, here.
