Zinc and Magnesium were two of the first things I started with my kids. My sons teeth grinding and restless legs cleared up probably within a week. :)Yes, the idea of the LOD is trying to heal the gut permanently. However once you learn about oxalate and go thru the dumping periods, you will likely never look at spinach and almonds the same way again.

When I see Dr. Oz or Dr. Mercola promote spinach, I nearly want to vomit. :-)Low Oxalate is a diet you start slowly. TRULY! It makes it one of the easiest diets to start, ant it has a steep learning curve so you just take it slow, it's not like doing GFCF where you just pick a day and jump in. LOL Start by removing the worst offenders. Baby steps on this one!!!

It's crazy that you said this today. I was about to call the dr b/c my low tone, leaky gut daughter (who I have been wanting to try low-ox with) just started showing signs of painful urination. About a year ago, she had blood in her urine 3 different times (trace amounts), but because it cleared up, the dr wasn't worried. I always thought that was weird. Could that have been crystals? She has inflammation/leaky gut/food sensitivities. So, by doing low-ox, can I expect a lot of gut healing? Is it possible that she could heal enough that she could eventually be on a normal diet or is it a diet she'll need to be on forever? I'm going to start with it soon - just giving her a bit more time on the supps we started because she doesn't really seem used to them yet.

I also found it interesting that someone said zinc defiency can be a cause of teeth grinding (both girls have low zinc compared to their copper). Both girls grind their teeth, especially when you give them a tight hug (I assume this is sensory seeking?). I am learning so much on this forum. So thank you!

PS Oh, painful urination and / or evidence of crystals in the urine, big sign!

In my opinion and the opinion of Owens who is the researcher / head of the ARI Autism/Oxalate project, if you feel you have leaky gut, you should be on the low oxalate diet. (See lowoxalate.info)

Low phenol/salicylate has been recommended for people who have ADHD, autism, tics, etc. (See Feingold.org)If your OAT test comes back high in the oxalic acids, then there is an oxalate issue. BUT says if the OAT oxalic part test comes back ok, that doesn't necessarily mean there's no trouble with it.

As a sort of non-scientific test for " do I have oxalate issues, " if you crave high oxalate foods, you probably have issues! One of my favorite pre-diet snacks would be a few clementines with nuts. Probably would exceed 100 mg oxalate in that one " snack. "

How does one know if your child needs to be on a low oxalate/phenol/salicytate diet? Do the food sensitivity blood tests test for that?

oops hit sent. lolum so anyway, I would probably get the natural calm without the calcium.

There is a cal-mag-zinc supp out there which I think would be fine for supplementing a normal healthy diet in a normal adult. Since we are not talking about healthy diets (well diets healthy, just unhealthy absorptions, and maybe not well-rounded like 2000 cal diet would be)

Did you ever try the natural calm plus calcium? Is there more of a benefit giving the zinc and mag together, and calcium at a different time? I definitley want to try the natural calm - just not sure if I should get the one with the calcium or not. . .

Sorry I forgot to answer the last part..ugh, duh. I give zinc and mag together at night and calcium in the morning. If he seems hyper, I give mag about 2 hours later. (and then reduce the dose at night...)

I give iron (Flora vital) and B12 in the morning. I do try to space out my vitamins so that the body can uptake what it needs.

GREAT! :-)Waiting on your low ox juice recipes, my dear :-D

You know, I don't know. I know that Calcium and Magnesium like to be at a certain ratio which is why I don't put them together. I don't want them competing. I guess I haven't gotten that far yet.

My biggest concern/goal whatever is getting the most nutrition in so that the body can do what it's supposed to be doing. This is the reason I juice (so much! everyday, most of the time now, 2 times a day) --

Juicing --because of it's neat form-- gets the benefit of having no barriers for uptake. Barriers like fiber. Barriers of quantity. I can juice 4 carrots and 1 apple and have my kid drink it, thereby getting all the vitamins and enzymes it has to offer, without the fiber to inhibit uptake, and the sheer quantity of the brain turning off the hunger que. And...the vitamins in the form the body understands with the enzymes needed to do what the body needs to convert it. Food is truly a neat little package. I had read that juicer drinks (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids) find it's way into the blood stream within 10 minutes, vs 3 hours, or never...

And it has the benefit of being raw. So you aren't cooking all the good stuff out of it. (this is also why I like the idea of fermented foods, sprouted foods, etc.) as the nutrition is increased dramatically.

And in my opinion, I think that lack of proper nutrition (in all it's forms) is truly the root cause of all of this. Without it, your body doesn't have the resources to kill a virus, or a bacteria, or the body to a status of alkaline so that things like fungus can't survive. The more I read, the more I am convinced that truly at the heart of dis-ease, is not enough resources in the nutrition department. The body becomes confused and starts killing everything for survival as in the case of allergies. Our bodies WANT to live. Even if it's dysfunctional.

Just take a vitamin like B12. It has so many functions and operates on so many levels, that if it isn't available, the symptoms are everything from wetting your pants, acting crazy, autistic like symptoms, falling down due to balance issues. I feel like if you flood the body with nutrition, it heals and gets back in the game.

I keep reading things like that over and over and over, whether it be cancer, autism, crohns, -- I mean, you name it...it's just a lack of the right stuff. I mean, yes, you have assaults on the body like mercury, viruses, bacteria, fungus, which causes these other things, but how many recovery stories are really necessary to see the bottom line? I don't have a cold year round --My body obviously fought off the whatever, virus, bacteria, and all I took was some garlic, drank some soup, and kept fluids in me. I recovered.

I think Stan Kurtz was absolutely correct when he said that our kids are the most biologically involved.

Take diet, remove the offenders, the bodies offense can get back up after a blast - because it's not being flooded on the front line anymore. Take antibiotics - kills everything, good, bad, indifferent, and allows you to do a control, alt, delete. (Same with anti-virals) -- Probiotics, allows you to plant seeds of good bacteria again, without a crowded yeast mess. These are all tools. But the bottom line is - nutrition (vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids) is KEY. I truly believe that. I really believe that is what saved my child. Nutrition is the soldiers, the rest are just ammo. When you run out of soldiers -- what good is ammo?

Without it, your body doesn't have the resources to kill a virus, or a bacteria, or the body to a status of alkaline so that things like fungus can't survive. The more I read, the more I am convinced that truly at the heart of dis-ease, is not enough resources in the nutrition department. The body becomes confused and starts killing everything for survival as in the case of allergies. Our bodies WANT to live. Even if it's dysfunctional.Just take a vitamin like B12. It has so many functions and operates on so many levels, that if it isn't available, the symptoms are everything from wetting your pants, acting crazy, autistic like symptoms, falling down due to balance issues. I feel like if you flood the body with nutrition, it heals and gets back in the game.I keep reading things like that over and over and over, whether it be cancer, autism, crohns, -- I mean, you name it...it's just a lack of the right stuff. When you run out of soldiers -- what good is ammo?laura> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > >> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > I really need some help, here. My son has been complaining about his penis pain as well. He would say boo-boo and point to the groin area. Does this mean that he is dumping oxalates or that oxalates are an issue? Even though I am not doing LOD, I think he is getting foods that are low to medium in oxalates. He has never had any kind of nut in his life (severe allergies), never tried spinach or beet.

Thanks,

You can find some food lists on lowoxalate.info or join trying_low_oxalates yahoo group to download the latest values on a spreadsheet. You can look thru it and determine if there is a culprit. Lots of the GF grains are high, like quinoa and amaranth.
