If you did you would have more leverage with an insurance company to meet individual needs. Your medical supply place has specific contracts with meter and strip companies. They get a break doing it this way and it would cost them more to get an individual item for you. The offer to send you a new meter with a time change means they can bill your insurance company for it and earn more..
