I had read her books 20 years ago and attended one of her lectures. I guess that it just didn't stick. I heard about her books again on Oprah and decided to try it again. I then did a Y! groups search for Geneen Roth and found this group. I'm so happy to find you all! A quick bio. I'm 41 (almost 42). I am very happily married to an amazing man who is my best friend and partner in life. We have an adorable son who is now 2.5 years old. At my highest weight, I was 321. I got to down to 280 just before my gastric bypass surgery. Unlike some poeple, I am extremely glad I had the surgery. It wasn't a cure but it was a powerful tool that helped me lose a huge amount of weight and I've managed to keep the vast majority of it off even though it's been more than 6 years. Even though I am in a great place in my life, I still battle the food demons. I still eat when I am not hungry, when I'm bored or stressed, or in front of the tv, etc. You all know the drill. I've been trying to eat consciously for the past week or so but it's become clear that I need some help, additional advice, and support. I'm so looking forward to being a member of this group! Guest guest
I might just go ahead and buy the book. I love Intuitve Eating - have read it several times. It's funny, because I have been so happy the past several months, and have actually dropped weight. I exercise because I feel good and eat good foods for the same reason. However, lately I have been slipping into the "wow, i have lost some weight - what if I gain it back? What if I eat too much? Why did I eat that?" etc... and I feel like I am kind of losing it. Have you had this problem? Subject: Re: I'm new, tooTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Date: Friday, October 29, 2010, 1:19 PM OMG you HAVE to get Women, Food & God. I have been reading Geneen for years & I loved her ideas BUT I never really believed that they could work for me UNTIL I read WFG. That was the beginning of an entire SHIFT in my thinking. I bless her for writing that book & I can't wait until her newest book comes out. She told us she finished it just before the workshop started at the beginning of this month. The IE book by Tribole & Resch is also good because it is more specific than Geneen's in actually explaining how it works. Maybe your library has them & you can read through & see if you want to buy them. I have to own them because I mark mine up & write all over them. Also, if you go to youtube & search am I hungry there are good short clips by a medical doctor on how to do IE. She was on PBS but again, I thought "great idea but it won't work for me, let me just try ONE MORE DIET." LOL. mj

Guest guest
hi, I agree with abby, it's important to remember that it takes time to change our habits that we developed over years of dieting so try to be patient. This process really does take time. besides, I have always found in my own past that the slower the weight loss, the longer I was able to maintain it. That might mean that I wasn't losing it on some crazy fad diet at the time but as I got older it took much longer to lose weight. I guess all those years of dieting & restriction had my body hoarding fat whenever it got the opportunity. I feel so much more comfortable with eating intuitively now but it has taken me several months to just be able to tell WHEN I am hungry & I'm still working on learning to tell when I am comfortably satisfied. I do see a LOT of progress though in my eating habits, not nearly as much mindless eating & I've really been able to choose the foods that my body wants & not listen to the foods my mind thinks I should have. It's starting to feel more & more natural every day. Keep going girl & it will all come together but take your time because you are worth it. mj > > > > > > > > > Subject: Re: I'm new, too > > T... > Date: Friday, October 29, 2010, 1:19 PM > > > > > > > > OMG you HAVE to get Women, Food & God. Guest guest
It's good to hear that this process is becoming more natural; some days it still feels like a lot of effort for me. Over the past week I've been reading the posts more often and making sure that I really slow down when I'm eating to make sure that I know when I'm satisfied before I'm really full. Even putting my fork down between each bite does seem to help and I find that it only takes a little bit for me to feel full. Although when I eat so little at each meal I do find that I get hungrier faster, anyone else notice this?TaiTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Sat, October 30, 2010 7:01:58 PMSubject: Re: I'm new, too hi, I agree with abby, it's important to remember that it takes time to change our habits that we developed over years of dieting so try to be patient. Guest guest
Jami you are so lucky to have a friend like THAT. mj > > > > Subject: Re: I'm new, too > To: IntuitiveEating_Support > Date: Monday, November 1, 2010, 1:21 PM > > > Â > > > > Jami, > > That still happens to me. I have a period where I can't seem to stop eating. When it happens I have to start to backtrack & ask myself, " what happened today that made me want to eat all the time? What might I be avoiding by eating (many times it's just because my house is a mess & I don't really want to clean it up so might as well EAT). Another thing that I sometimes do is ask myself if there is a particular FEELING that I am trying to STUFF down with food. Since my mom died at the end of May I've been having waves of sadness come over me & I'm trying to allow myself to feel that & not to mask it by stuffing my body with food that it doesn't need. Stuffing emotions never works anyway, they always come back & then I have the added guilt of having binged on top of the original emotion. I have to tell you, though, with time & perserverance, these binge periods are almost minimal now. Actually they are now pretty rare. I'm getting much better at recognizing > the problem right away & taking care of THAT without stuffing my face. This is an awesome way to live once it gets established but it does take time to break all those bad habits that I've developed over YEARS of over & under eating. Even just listening to my own body signals took months to become natural but it is getting to feel like I'm " getting it " finally. > > The most important thing for me is to recognize when I am getting back into that OLD 'diet mentality' & to nip that in the bud right away. Been there, done that, never want to do that again!!!! But still, my mind sometimes entertains it so I have to remind it that " I " am in charge & not " it " . lol. > > keep going, you are doing well > > mj >
