Break a leg may have several different origins. The general one is that actors believe that it's bad luck to offer good luck. However, to 'break a leg' may also mean to bend a leg, to genuflect, to bow, hence breaking a leg may mean to take your bows at the end of a worthy performance. Also, it can mean to make a strenuous effort http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/break-a-leg.html Origins of phrases and superstitions are really interesting, like not whistling back stage is considered unlucky, but it was how stage hands used to order the movement of the back drops, so whistling at the wrong time may result in you being hit by some falling scenery or a sandbag!
