I am reading A Course In Weight Loss by nne on (do not be fooled by

the title, it really is an IE book!). She has an exercise where you buy one new

plate, bowl, glass, knife, fork and spoon as well as a new napkin and place mat

and candlestick holders and candles. And the idea, or at least what I get out of

it, is to redevelop a love affair with food. She has you set up an alter which

you put these pretty new things on until we are ready to incorporate them into

our new relationship with food. What you wrote made me think of this chapter in

her book. I couldn't justify buying just one new of each of these. And all of

my dishes are hand me downs or from garage sales or from when I was married.

I've never, ever choosen my own dishes. So I bought a set of new glasses, and

an entire new set of dishes and utensils. I have them set up on my alter. And

my place setting is so beautiful. And I had such a good time shopping and

picking out my new dishes. And I really do feel this is changing something in

my psyche. I'm not sure I can explain it, but I seem to be more thoughtful in

my eating and in what I choose to eat.

> Also I bought

> several very pretty cheap plates, $1 each. A while back in my diet mode I

> ad read how eating off a small plate and a blue one could help reduce

> intake. So I have my little blue plate but decided to celebrate my new

> mindset of IE by treating myself to some pretty plates instead. They remind

> me of enjoying my food while I am eating it.

yay, that's awesome!i remember when i bought new plates and silverware when i was newly single. it felt amazingly empowering! imagine that i DESERVED to buy my own stuff, that nobody else got to have an opinion about... wow!

my parents also took 20 years to pick a new pattern for their dishes, which made me feel like it was this hugely important decision, not to be taken lightly. imagine my surprise when i went to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and found I could buy a 4 place setting box of dishes for less than $50! it was amazing!

i remember thinking, " at this price, i could afford to buy new dishes EVERY YEAR if i wanted to! " (my parents had made me think it was this HUGE investment. of course, they probably bought expensive dishes...but again, no need to!)

i haven't needed to buy dishes since then, now 6 years ago.but every day it makes me happy to see my beautiful handpainted dishes! so YES, you deserve your own beautiful dishes that YOU pick out!

and i do think that telling yourself this might help you believe you deserve other good, beautiful things in life. i think a lot of us eat un-intuititively because we dont' really believe we deserve the good things in life, and we figure at least food is there for us.

just a thought!best,abby
