Did you see if they'll cover generic or any other antiviral like Acyclovir or Famcyclovir?Pharmacies are slowly moving over to generic Valtrex - I had the same thing happen to me. Everyone was saying they were getting generic valtrex and I was totally confused because my pharmacy didn't have it. One day they tried to charge me a whopper of a bill for the valtrex and that's how I found out they finally offer the generic. Name brand is very expensive. If he's a little more stimmy - that kinda is a regression. But if you can control that with naturals, that would be awesome. Good luck and I hope it goes well! It never has for me so I would love to hear that *someone* can do it! Lol!

Hi all,

We've been on Valtrex/diflucan or Nizoral for the past 9 months. 2 days ago our new insurance began refusing to cover Valtrex. At $5 a pill 3x a day we cannot afford to pay out of pocket for it since we have been paying out of pocket for so many other interventions. So we decided to see how he does off of it. So far a little more stimmy but no regressions yet.

We would like to try a natural antiviral instead and wanted to know what people have had success with. We are looking into Virastop, OLE or Lysine. My son was the kind of kid who was sick all the time last year and since starting Valtrex his immune system has really gotten much stronger and now he rarely gets sick and fights off viruses much faster. Which natural antivirals can help keep his immune system strong? We are already on Vitamin C, Zinc and Colostrum. Also, can I go off rx antifungals and switch to natural antifungals as well?

Thanks so much for your input!

The insurance sent a letter saying that will only cover antiviral therapy for

immunosuppressed patients or with HIV. We've done a basic immune panel with an

allergist and nothing showed up, perhaps b/c he was on valtrex for 6 months at

that point.

Anyway, I think they are probably going to blacklist us now. My son has always

been stimmy and it comes and goes in waves even when on Valtrex. He has really

good days and really bad ones even when we haven't added anything new. We have

never been able to pinpoint it, and I suspect it is food related (we are on

GFCFSF but I think he may have other sensitivities even though his food allergy

test came back ok.)

The things we saw Valtrex really help with was strengthening the immune system,

getting rid off small red dots around the mouth, and more physical awareness of

his environment. But he is still very much autistic and it doesn't seem to have

made a significant improvement in that area after 9 months. He still stims and

repeats sentences all the time and says things out of context and makes

inappropriate noises.

We started AC chelation and want to see where that will take us.

But I guess right now we have to watch him closely to see if he regresses

without the Valtrex or doesn't respond to natural antivirals. If that's the case

we'll have to get back on it and take out a loan :) We'll keep you updated if we

succeed!

Thanks again!

I was able to get Medical to pay 100% for the cost of Valtrex. Get a letter

drafted from your DAN/Pediatrician stating that it's absolutely necessary for

this medication because your child is allergic to the blue dyes that the

generics are injected with. Then have the pharmacy submit a TAR form to Medical

along with the signed letter from your DAN, and they should cover it 100%. So,

if you have Medical, I'd advise going that route.

Best of Luck!

Just spoke to my DAN he says my insurance will cover most likely cover Acyclovir

since its on the list of meds that are automatically approved without needing a

pre-authorization! If we haven't been black-listed it will probably go through.

So we are going to give him a week or two to see how he does without antivirals,

and if we see regression or getting sick again then we will try the Acyclovir.

Does anyone have good experiences with it?

Thanks,

Shiri

Cheryl, Thanks for the tip, I'm going to try the ice cream trick if the

acyclovir goes through, especially since its dosed at 4-5x a day. Do you know if

that tastes bad as well?

I don't remember my son complaining as much about the acyclovir as he did valtrex but I honestly don't know for sure.
