MJ,That is all we can ask for in most areas of our lives. I'm fighting that very much right now with my exercise. IE also, but exercise is the one bothering me more. I know, that if I can just get one workout in, I will feel wonderful and want to have that feeling all the time, and that the next workout will come easier, but taking that first step is so hard. Congratulations on making it this morning.DawnTo: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Tue, December 7, 2010 10:12:45 AMSubject: Re: resisting the scale & re-committing to IE guidelines

Thank you Anne, it helps to be reminded of those guidelines. And Dawn, thank you for letting me know that I am not alone in having these doubts. I am trying to be gentle with myself & that is how my reaction is different than the old "I've blown my diet, might as well throw in the towel & eat". The experience this time is something like, "I'm having trouble staying focused on IE what can I do to get the focus back." Different story, for sure.

This morning as I was focusing on eating my cereal I realized that my body gives me a very clear signal when it is full, I have been ignoring it. Today, I heard the sigh (the only way i can describe it) that happens when my body is satisfied (not full yet, but satisfied) & even though I hear this quite often I have very rarely stopped eating at that point. Today I decided that I needed to listen to it & stop. I ind it so interesting that even when I know what to do, I so often choose not to do it. Well, for one meal at least I chose to listen to my body & do what it wanted me to do. That is a bit of a breakthrough. I just read somewhere that IE is accomplished by one meal at a time & that was one meal where I was able to completely eat intuitively. And the feeling that it gave me is pretty great so now it is easier to want to have that feeling again.

Mali:Your words really resonated with me!  Thanks!Sue

Hi MJ,

Totally know where you are coming from. Remember not to start treating IE as a " diet " ... The guidelines are not supposed to be strict rules to follow perfectly. Its a way of life, to be taken one step at a time. Don't beat yourself up. See this as progress as you are learning more about yourself.

What helps me listen more to my body signals is if I really try to enjoy my food. Savor the food and as you are paying attention to taste and smell, you also become more aware of satisfaction and fullness. Also, why do you think you are not listening to the cues? Are there emotional issues behind it?

Going on the scale will not do anything for you. It will only give you another reason to stress. I went on the scale a few weeks ago and even though I had lost weight I was stressing about loosing more and not gaining it back. So it really doesn't help and it doesn't matter.

The only thing that matters is how you feel. Take care of your body because it feels good... listen to your body because it feels good... enjoy your food, well, because its more enjoyable to eat that way... not because of a guideline or a rule - they were only meant to make you aware of these things.

And take deep breath... relax... :)

Hope this helps!

Mali

I'm mad because this is getting really hard to stick to. I'm exercising regularly & I'm eating what I want but I'm not listening to my body enough for the hunger cues & the fullness signals. I need to start doing that more. any tips on ways to remind myself to check in before I start popping that food into my mouth without thinking.
