When I have been wayyyyy off track in the past I find that if I sit quietly with a note book ( when I have no time restrictions or interruptions) and just start to wright down all my thoughts. Before I know it I have filled about 10 pages and my brain feels a whole lot "lighter". It de clutters all your thoughts. For me I think its easier to focus on the positive voices in my head with out the negative ones taking over. You know its listening to your negative self talk that has your clothes feeling a bit tighter right now.

HIIt has been 2 months since I've weighed myself & I am really getting the urge to set up the wii (because I threw out the scale) & weigh myself. lately my clothes have been feeling tighter than they were & I know it is because I haven't been following the guidelines as much as I used to. I'm mad because this is getting really hard to stick to. I'm exercising regularly & I'm eating what I want but I'm not listening to my body enough for the hunger cues & the fullness signals. I need to start doing that more. any tips on ways to remind myself to check in before I start popping that food into my mouth without thinking.thanks,mj

Hi MJ,

Totally know where you are coming from. Remember not to start treating IE as a

" diet " ... The guidelines are not supposed to be strict rules to follow

perfectly. Its a way of life, to be taken one step at a time. Don't beat

yourself up. See this as progress as you are learning more about yourself.

What helps me listen more to my body signals is if I really try to enjoy my

food. Savor the food and as you are paying attention to taste and smell, you

also become more aware of satisfaction and fullness. Also, why do you think you

are not listening to the cues? Are there emotional issues behind it?

Going on the scale will not do anything for you. It will only give you another

reason to stress. I went on the scale a few weeks ago and even though I had

lost weight I was stressing about loosing more and not gaining it back. So it

really doesn't help and it doesn't matter.

The only thing that matters is how you feel. Take care of your body because it

feels good... listen to your body because it feels good... enjoy your food,

well, because its more enjoyable to eat that way... not because of a guideline

or a rule - they were only meant to make you aware of these things.

And take deep breath... relax... :)

Hope this helps!

MJ-I don't have any good tips. I'm sorry, but I wanted to say that I understand. I'm doing a bit of that myself, and right ow part of what I'm working hardest on is being gentle with myself and not beating myself up. Hang in there. This is a hard time of the year in general.DawnTo:

I am also hearing the same old voices in my head. This time of year is really stressful for me as my husband struggles with major depression which is exacerbated during the holidays. My days are focused on the well being of everyone else and my needs are left behind. I have been stress eating like crazy!I am really trying each day to focus on myself and doing the kinds of exercise I want to do. Yoga is helping me stay centered and in touch with my self. I am also trying to meditate a bit, to find some sense of peace in this busy time. I found some great free meditation apps for my phone that have been helpful. This is hard work-don't give up!- my body. I kno To: IntuitiveEating_Support Sent: Tue, December 7, 2010 8:28:16 AMSubject: Re: resisting the scale & re-committing to IE guidelines

Hi MJ,

For me it is about recommitting.  My coach (Gillian) took it back

for me to three things:

1.  Are you hungry?

2.  What do you want?

3.  How do you want to feel when you are done eating?

Hope this helps.

Thank you Anne, it helps to be reminded of those guidelines. And Dawn, thank you

for letting me know that I am not alone in having these doubts. I am trying to

be gentle with myself & that is how my reaction is different than the old " I've

blown my diet, might as well throw in the towel & eat " . The experience this time

is something like, " I'm having trouble staying focused on IE what can I do to

get the focus back. " Different story, for sure.

This morning as I was focusing on eating my cereal I realized that my body gives

me a very clear signal when it is full, I have been ignoring it. Today, I heard

the sigh (the only way i can describe it) that happens when my body is satisfied

(not full yet, but satisfied) & even though I hear this quite often I have very

rarely stopped eating at that point. Today I decided that I needed to listen to

it & stop. I ind it so interesting that even when I know what to do, I so often

choose not to do it. Well, for one meal at least I chose to listen to my body &

do what it wanted me to do. That is a bit of a breakthrough. I just read

somewhere that IE is accomplished by one meal at a time & that was one meal

where I was able to completely eat intuitively. And the feeling that it gave me

is pretty great so now it is easier to want to have that feeling again.
