I'm going to use 's words " I am using a rotation diet, not THE

rotation diet. " -- meaning she rotated these foods over 4 days, it wasn't

necessarily what was suggested. (I hope that makes sense) and yes, I use

pineapple daily (fresh) because it's got great enzymes in it. And although it's

high in salicycates, it's low ox and my kids LOVE it. We eat squash, differnt

kinds, but baked with honey and Earth balance butter (soy free). We eat beans.

I love beans, black beans, adzuki beans, pinto, cannelli beans and lentils. and

I just put some on the meal plan. For variance, and nutrition.

I make my own bean dip. We dip rice crackers in it, and I use it for making

tacos. I just found an Ivory Teff (La Tortilla Factory) gluten free wrap I can

use. It's a little rubbery, and trying to figure out how to make it less

rubbery or bake it so that it can serve as a hard shell over a taco roll or

something.

And I found the same thing - I spend about the same and we waste NOTHING. My

food bill even with juicing - is about where it was when I thought I was eating

healthy -- and I was, just not healthy for me or us! (Well, the muffins I made

that came out like rocks wasted like $20 in ingredients!! ARGH!!)

I love my juicer. I own and use my Jack LaLanne Power Elite Juicer (I got it

for about $180). It was worth every penny. My dream is to own a Norwalk Juice

Press. Don't look it up, and don't look at the price LOL! But if you do, you

can see how much I love juicing. I thought I loved my fermenting crock, but I

do love my juicer more. The juicer gets way more attention.

There is a great list on the LOD website. It's categorized. So it helps with

meal planning. It's what I use. I try to use only 1 high ox for each meal.

It's not always possible, but I try.

It was Toni that pointed me to the oxalate issue for my son (although I had

figured it for my brother) -- as he was always complaining of 'penis' pain and

that his belly hurt.

Once I got the low ox thing figured out (and it took some time!! because i am

also doing Feingold!) -- and then added the right supps (thanks to Toni!), it

was like CHRISTMAS again for us...

I joined the low oxalate group and I read and read and read...great stuff on

there...

laura

PS. If they have the zinc issue, use the zinc monomethione. WORKS FAST! and it

works wonders. My sister said she found a bottle of capsules for like $5. --

However, I found these for $8. and I just put them in my kids pineapple juice or

lemonade - they don't even know it's there. (I was getting it compounded for

twice the price!)

Thanks! I am going to order these. For three-year-olds, is one capsule a day good to start with or do you give more than that? Also, is there any need to give with food or on an empty stomach, certain time of day, etc? I give zinc at night. Sometimes it can cause tummy upset so being asleep while digesting it helps LOLFavorite document to help with dosing some things: http://www.icdrc.org/documents/Rossignol%20simplified%20biomed%20autism%20file%202009.pdf

I give zinc at night. Sometimes it can cause tummy upset so being asleep while digesting it helps LOLFavorite document to help with dosing some things: http://www.icdrc.org/documents/Rossignol%20simplified%20biomed%20autism%20file%202009.pdf

Thanks! I am going to order these. For three-year-olds, is one capsule a day good to start with or do you give more than that? Also, is there any need to give with food or on an empty stomach, certain time of day, etc? Thanks again.

It was Toni that pointed me to the oxalate issue for my son (although I had figured it for my brother) -- as he was always complaining of 'penis' pain and that his belly hurt.

Once I got the low ox thing figured out (and it took some time!! because i am also doing Feingold!) -- and then added the right supps (thanks to Toni!), it was like CHRISTMAS again for us...

I joined the low oxalate group and I read and read and read...great stuff on there...

PS. If they have the zinc issue, use the zinc monomethione. WORKS FAST! and it works wonders. My sister said she found a bottle of capsules for like $5. -- However, I found these for $8. and I just put them in my kids pineapple juice or lemonade - they don't even know it's there. (I was getting it compounded for twice the price!)

Thanks Toni. Sorry for all the questions! gave me a good brand of zinc. Can you recommend a good brand of magnesium? Thanks so much - you've been a huge help. :)

I give my zinc and magnesium together (separate pills) at night and have never had a problem with absorption I suspect, since both levels are good and both troubles went away. I do believe they compete but maybe this is only a problem at certain doses or when dealing with minuscule amounts? Maybe giving the supp everyday in more than RDA amounts takes care of the competition? I give separate supps because then I can control when/where/how much etc. I think once you've alleviated certain issues for a certain amt of time, you can probably look into multi-vits and be ok. I am looking here and there for a couple multi-vitamins but still giving a lot of separate things. It's expensive and a pain, but we are "getting there" in terms of not having to give so many.

Thanks Toni! I feel better now about started out slowly. I was thinking I would try to do LOD and low phenol and all of that at once. Thank you for posting the recommendation for LOD for leaky gut. That is the big problem with my kids and they seem to fit with many of your descriptions of kids who would benefit from this diet. So I will just try this for now and maybe cut out other things later. Can you give zinc and magnesium together or do they complete the way zinc and calcium do? Do you give two separate supps, and if so, how much do you give? Thanks again!

Zinc and Magnesium were two of the first things I started with my kids. My sons teeth grinding and restless legs cleared up probably within a week. :)Yes, the idea of the LOD is trying to heal the gut permanently. However once you learn about oxalate and go thru the dumping periods, you will likely never look at spinach and almonds the same way again. When I see Dr. Oz or Dr. Mercola promote spinach, I nearly want to vomit. :-)Low Oxalate is a diet you start slowly. TRULY! It makes it one of the easiest diets to start, ant it has a steep learning curve so you just take it slow, it's not like doing GFCF where you just pick a day and jump in. LOL Start by removing the worst offenders. Baby steps on this one!!!

It's crazy that you said this today. I was about to call the dr b/c my low tone, leaky gut daughter (who I have been wanting to try low-ox with) just started showing signs of painful urination. About a year ago, she had blood in her urine 3 different times (trace amounts), but because it cleared up, the dr wasn't worried. I always thought that was weird. Could that have been crystals? She has inflammation/leaky gut/food sensitivities. So, by doing low-ox, can I expect a lot of gut healing? Is it possible that she could heal enough that she could eventually be on a normal diet or is it a diet she'll need to be on forever? I'm going to start with it soon - just giving her a bit more time on the supps we started because she doesn't really seem used to them yet. I also found it interesting that someone said zinc defiency can be a cause of teeth grinding (both girls have low zinc compared to their copper). Both girls grind their teeth, especially when you give them a tight hug (I assume this is sensory seeking?). I am learning so much on this forum. So thank you!

PS Oh, painful urination and / or evidence of crystals in the urine, big sign!

In my opinion and the opinion of Owens who is the researcher / head of the ARI Autism/Oxalate project, if you feel you have leaky gut, you should be on the low oxalate diet. (See lowoxalate.info)Low phenol/salicylate has been recommended for people who have ADHD, autism, tics, etc. (See Feingold.org)If your OAT test comes back high in the oxalic acids, then there is an oxalate issue. BUT says if the OAT oxalic part test comes back ok, that doesn't necessarily mean there's no trouble with it.As a sort of non-scientific test for "do I have oxalate issues," if you crave high oxalate foods, you probably have issues! One of my favorite pre-diet snacks would be a few clementines with nuts. Probably would exceed 100 mg oxalate in that one "snack."

How does one know if your child needs to be on a low oxalate/phenol/salicytate diet? Do the food sensitivity blood tests test for that?

Sorry I forgot to answer the last part..ugh, duh.

I give zinc and mag together at night and calcium in the morning. If he seems

hyper, I give mag about 2 hours later. (and then reduce the dose at night...)

I give iron (Flora vital) and B12 in the morning.

I do try to space out my vitamins so that the body can uptake what it needs.
