Hello, Becky,

Welcome aboard. Just a year ago now I was in your place. Since then I

have learned a bit about this new world of diabetes that we now inhabit.

The first thing is: we need good meters, either the Prodigy Blood

Glucose meter or the Solo V2. Don't let anyone convince you to put out

your own money for any other meter, that is, unless you are in Europe.

Your meter will be your best friend, as mine is for me.

The other thing is: don't sweat the small stuff. Just after I was

diagnosed, a friend told me that the maxim: " Moderation in all things "

applies to diabetes, too. You won't get everything riht the first day,

moth or even year.

That's enough sermonizing. You need to find that meter.

All the best,

Hi Becky,

Welcome to the group. I am Lora in Michigan and I just found out in June. I

am now on 2 glyburide pills a day and am muddling along trying to do the

right thing with diet but loving good food too much.

This is a wonderful group and I have learned a lot. There are also some

good books on the BARD web site for your digital talking book player if you

have one.

Welcome Becky. I am Pat Wolf from CA and have been type 1 for 67 years. I

have taught diabetic education classes at the Braille Institute in L.A.

Let us know what questions you have, which are probably many! What kind of

medication are you on? Your best friend will be your glucose meter, which

your insurance should pay for.

Best withes.

So is our 15-year old son! Unless you're a teen, excessive hunger might be more

emotional than real. All of us struggle with food cravings from time to time. We

had donuts this morning for breakfast after our son requested them. I enjoyed

mine, even though I knew I'd pay for it. And boy did I! It took me until 1:00 in

the afternoon, with 2 extra injections of Humalog to get my bg back down.

I won't pretend to understand all the psychological nuances concerning over

eating or unnatural food cravings, but feel free to talk to us about your

struggles. And I know there are many on the list who most likely can relate.

I slipped today and ate some candy I found in the fridge.

I had tomato soup with some cheese in it for lunch.

I had fresh fruit and a Mrs breakfast sandwich.

The thing to do when you slip is get back up!

We all do it! The key is to do it less than you used to. As changes in your

patterns and behaviors slowly become your new lifestyle, it won't seem a big

deal to have one little sweet during the day. And while some may disagree or not

be able to handle even this amount of falling off the wagon, I find I am able to

have a cookie or 2 a day. Again, always keep the thrust of your eating goals on

nutrition. If you're eating 97% healthy, the 3% junk will not impact you.

yes, I have been learning that one. Sometimes I go over and my sugar is

up, but at least I take it and don't decide it's okay. then the next

day goes much better, and I feel better about myself and my health when

I keep it in check. I am not perfect, maybe someday I will be. but

like so many other things in life this is to me a " day-at-a-time "

thing. I can handle a day. I can't handle forever or a month, but

today, yes, it's doable.

is continuing on the feeding tube and we are hoping that he will have

enough of the food cans to last until Saturday morning the 10th when the new

shipment of cans will come. He only is being tested about olnce a day

because he is holding around 120 with the feeding tube.

He is doing OK but my foot continues to cause me a lot of pain and I am

trying to hold on and not go into the emergency room.
