Guest guest
Hi my son has been on Valtrex, since October for the second time. (the first time was in 06 for a short time) We have noticed in the last two weeks complaints of ear pain but this week has been the worst. We have a doctor's apptmt tomorrow, but he started screaming on Thursday night uncontrollably. I gave motrin and ear drops, he calmed and 3 hrs later the same thing. So I thought maybe ear infection and cold, but the next day he said his ears were fine, but would not let me touch them. I called the doctor and he said watch and call back in the morning, Saturday. So I stopped Valtrex this weekend ( fr. and Sat), since his breathing was labored as well, just to give him a break from detox. Over the last 3 months, we have seen, back rashes, bleeding lips and split lips. We had a change from Valtrex to Valacyclovir as well. He seemed better this weekend so I restarted, Valtrex today and give his normal doses and lo and behold at 1230, he comes out screaming and holding his ears saying he cant take it anymore. What should I do? Is he not a candidate for Valtrex? Cheryl L, or anyone? thanks Selena He has an apptmnt today and I will update you after. Guest guest
You really shouldn't be going back and forth on starting and stopping antivirals. "Taking a break" is not appropriate for antivirals. The switch from Valtrex to Valacyclovir really didn't do anything for you, they're the same drug.I think you should take him to the doctor. He may actually have an ear infection and you don't need a DAN to tell you that. A ped, Urgent Care or ER can make sure he's okay. Just because it felt better the next day doesn't mean the infection (if he has one) went away. If you've been on it since October, it's not likely the valtrex if he's only complaining about ear pain in the last 2 weeks. Seriously, I think you need to take him to a doctor. If he's had ear pain for 2 weeks, why would you wait?If it's the valtrex, you might consider switching to another antiviral. I'm not a doctor. I can't really give you any answers. I don't even really know the whole situation. But the best answer I have for you is, when in doubt, see a doctor. Two weeks is a long time to have ear pain. Even though we see things like die off, it doesn't mean everything is die off, nor does it mean that everything is related to each other. Sometimes very normal things (like ear infections) happen. And I know it's hard to differentiate what's happening when but it's not uncommon to come down with something close to the time you start something else. It happens. Things aren't always inter-related. Sometimes you get sick. Sometimes infections happen. Don't write something off simply because you've started something new and you just want to wait it out. Keep things in perspective. What would you have done if he wasn't on Valtrex for you to consider it a suspect (although I doubt it's the cause since you started in October)? You would have taken him to the doctor to see if he had an ear infection. Don't stop doing the things you normally would do. Guest guest
I would def see about the ear infection. Did your son have the hep B vaccine at birth? That virus loves the ear and eye so maybe it is coming out. I know phosphatidylcholine helped my daughter in that area somewhat, she was wearing hearing aides and now she doesn't but does have some oversensitive issues w/ hearing occasionally. If you're son doesn't have a big issue w/ soy that may be a good option just to see if it helps. Don't stop and start on the antivirals though, you dont want any crazy mutations. Good luck! > > Hi my son has been on Valtrex, since October for the second time.
