Can you list the brand of Carnosine you're using or is this a

prescription?  Is it the same as L-Carnosine?  Thanks for the info.

I had asked our DAN about speech and he had pointed me to

carnosine and DMG.  I went home and investigated the use of carnosine

to address issues to do with speech.  Dr. Chez did a study with

carnosine and found that it helps kids on the spectrum with a number of

things.  One of the articles I had read about Chez's study is here:

http://www.autismcoach.com/Carnosine%20Study.htm

I'm giving carnosine because my daughter has strong indications of

verbal apraxia.  She did not babble and she drooled excessively until

about age 3 years, 2 months.  She could not make any sounds.  No verbal

imitation at all.  Her ABA therapists could prompt her until the cows

come home and still nothing.

Zinc is needed for carnosine absorption.  Or, rather, the absorption of

carnosine depletes zinc and we all know zinc deficiency opens up

another can of worms.  Dr. Chez also recommends giving some Vit E with

carnosine (which I was not doing before but have just started doing

now).  It's thought that carnosine is responsible for making

neurotransmitters (with the idea of carrying messages from the brain to

the mouth - and probably to other muscles in the body, as well).  Right

now, I'm concerned about speech and I'm looking to increase

neurotransmitters to carry out motor planning functions in the mouth

necessary for speech.

I don't do supplementation based on weight.  I just learned that this

is ineffective.  The bottle will say that a full grown adult (who is

assumed healthy with normal metabolic processes) will need one 500 mg

capsule of carnosine a day, so the logic would be that a child 1/3 of

the weight of a full sized adult will need 1/3 of a cap, and then the

dosage would be about 160 mg.  But, a child in my daughter's situation

is lacking something -- and something is not right with her metabolic

processes, and that's why there's enough deficiency causing her not to

know how to make sounds needed for speech.  She needs way more than a

healthy full grown adult.

My son (also with an autism diagnosis) also started to drool

excessively and has some malabsoprtion issues, so I've been starting

him on the carnosine and zinc, as well.  When I do, he drools less and

I'm moving to stop the drooling.  The drooling is an indication that

they cannot control the muscles in their mouths to keep the spit in. If

the child cannot keep spit in the mouth, then they are unable to

control the muscles necessary for speech.

I hate to butt in (but you know, that's what I do.) ;)

Okay, this L-Carnosine along with zinc -- what are you using this for

and why. I looked it up and it looks really interesting, but I am not

sure (or maybe I am missing something here) why you chose

this...(although, I can see why now, but I am curious I guess) what

behaviors prompted you to want to try this?

and when you say it's based on 'weight' -- you give more or less -- and

why zinc?

:) thanks, I am thinking after reading your posts that Jimmy and Rob

might benefit from this, and this is really the first time I have seen

this (or I probably have seen it, but maybe didn't understand it, which

is why I didn't even look at it??)

I'd started a little taurine a little bit back because I'd read that taurine helps with liver functions and Maia was having trouble digesting without enzymes, so I thought taurine would help to improve her ability to digest without as much enzymes.  I didn't know that taurine was a calmer but it makes sense, since I'd started it, her ABA therapist reported that Maia was more willing than usual to sitting down and doing her work.  She does seem less hyper.  I still have her on some candida enzymes right now to fight yeast and I started Culturelle again to fight gut bacteria and it seems to be doing well, so I can't tell if it's the taurine that's helping her digestive system or if it's yeast/bacteria fighting.

Taurine is a calmer, and my kid was going nutso. ;-)Also they say if the poo turns yellowish, add taurine. Not sure what that's about, I think it has to do with bile and fat digestion.

I'm using AOR right now.  At first, it seemed to cause diarrhea but that's because I didn't know to give zinc with it.  Toni, you mentioned something about taurine earlier -- I'm giving taurine to help the liver function better and I've noticed a significant improvement in Maia's digestive system.  How did you know to increase taurine (when you mentioned that you had to give taurine like candy)?  What are some indications that taurine needs to be increased?
