Hi , I've just gone through the same thing. I started lactating

heavily. I was sent to a Endocrinologist and my Prolactin level was elevated

He put me on a drug called Dostinex that I take twice a week and it has

stopped and my prolactin level has dropped to normal.

He said that it's from empty sella syndrome which was caused by the

increased pressure of the spinal fluid.

He said mine was due to the chiari, but you can develop empty sella and also

have elevated prolactin levels without having chiari.

Initially they were worried that I had a Pituatary tumor, thank God I didn't

I hope this helps. Take care

Dear Friends .....

I was diagnosed with Chiari II in August 1999, and I am a 39 year old female

with Spina Bifida. I'm hoping you can help me out with a query, possibly

concerning Chiari II Malformation. I have recently been experiencing

leakage " from the nipples of both my breasts. My doctor decided to do a

blood test to examine my " prolactin " levels which is a hormone that

stimulates breast milk. The results came back today and were quite

concerning. Apparently the normal level is 600 units, and I came back with a

reading of 4,500 units. This could have a major affect on my pituitary

glands and may be contributing to my headaches. My G.P. is going to consult

with an endocrinologist before making any confirmed diagnosis. Although I am

currently in a sexual relationship, pregnancy has been ruled out. My

question to the group is : Could this problem be in any way, associated with

Chiari II Malformation ?? Any information you could share with me from your

own experiences will be more than appreciated.

Yours sincerely

Good Morning,

Thanks Tina for your input, I was just looking up sites on Empty Sella :-)

http://www.ninds.nih.gov/health_and_medical/disorders/emptysella.htm

http://www.echt.chm.msu.edu/courseware/blockII/Pathology/Pituitary_17f.html

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/article/000349.htm

My hormones started acting up after the birth of our first child in 1984. My

cycle became irregular, I kept breast milk, hot flashes from hell.... Our

second was born, and I kept breast milk until I had a breast reduction five

years after my decompression.

I haven't been diagnosed with empty sella. It isn't always easy to pick up

on diagnostic images.

You're very welcome. I'm glad to help. I'll bet you do have empty sella. The

Endocrinologist told me that the sella has no spinal fluid in it and when

that fluid is forced into the sella it presses on the pituatary gland and

causes it to malfunction. Wow I also kept breast milk a little longer than

usual after my 2nd child was born. Could make for an interesting study.

Dear & Other members of the high prolactin levels hall of fame--

I, too, suffer from the same problem & I have been told it's from the

chiari, as well as, increased icp related to the chiari.

I have also been told certain medicines, such as antihistamistines,

antinaurseants, or betablockers such as Inderal or Inderal LA, will cause

the prolactin level & discharge to occur. So you might want to consult a

pharmacist to see if your meds are causing it.

BTW, if if it's related to the pituitary, chances are you will be having

some sort of disruption of menses. If not, it may be medication related.

In my case, the docs felt both the chiari and the meds. play a role in my

case. Just do not get alarmed & think I have empty sella b/c I have an

increased prolactin levels. It needs to be checked out by a specialist.
