Hi Joy,

When you get the book you'll realize it's not like a diet at all. If a journal helps you then keep one but only to find patterns for yourself, not to fall back into listing foods and calories, and portions sizes, and all that other obsessive stuff we used to have to do. Yes, the premise of IE is to eat only when hungry...however, if you feel the need to eat when not actually hungry, acknowledge that and don't beat yourself up for it. Just be aware of it. (That may be where a journal could be helpful in picking up patterns of behavior). You should eat what your body needs and asks for. If you have health issues that certain foods make worse, then your body probably doesn't want those things. Otherwise anything you really want is fair game. If I get something stuck in my head, I promise myself I can have that the next time I'm hungry, if I still want it. So the next time I'm hungry that will be the thing I eat first, provided it's easy enough to obtain of course. Once I've allowed it, I find I don't need to binge on it as I would have in the past. I'm really noticing now that my portion sizes are just becoming smaller than I ever thought would satisfy me in the old days and I don't really want a lot of the snack or fast foods I used to live on.

a few quick quesitons till my book comes

Ordered the intuitive eating book and will use that program specifically when it arrives. For now, I know I shouldn't restrict food, but should I:

1. Keep a journal food/mood noting my level of hunger and fullness?

2. Should I only eat when physiologically hungry?

3. Should I eat "real" food, before indulging in things like oreos and chocolate cake?

Thanks much,

J
