Guest guest
We started carnitine a couple of weeks ago (a fairly low dose -- 150mg 2x a day). I've noticed two times really foul smelling/slightly ammonia smelling stools. Those times they were pretty mushy and what I've considered yeasty in the past. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm increasing probiotics to see if that makes a difference. I wonder if the ammonia smell means he's making more/too much ammonia or if he's actually getting rid of it??? I've read that carnitine can cause a bad odor because of bacteria metabolism? Any info. is appreciated. Sharon

He can't swallow the big capsule so I open it and sprinkle about 1/5 of the 500mg cap in his juice 2x/a day, so he's roughly getting 200mg per day. This AM he had 3 ammonia smelling poops, soft. Is the acetyl-l-carnitine killing bacteria or doing something else? Lynn LR
Guest guest
Me too!!! i just started acetyl-l-carnitine on Monday and since yesterday his stools are mushy and smell horrible. I started oil of oregano thinking it is yeast but no changes so far... His motor skills have improved (better balance, mouvement coordination) and he has much more energy... a little bit hyper too. I was thinking of skipping a round this week end because of the possible yeast. Humm... > We started carnitine a couple of weeks ago (a fairly low dose -- > 150mg 2x a day). Guest guest
Jack has been doing well on L-carnitine too, in spite of the bad poop issues. Interesting.... Although lately (even before we started the carnitine) he is obsessed with numbers and is becoming more concerned about things going in a certain order. Anyone know what I can do for that? Is that considered OCD? Inositol maybe? Glad to hear I'm not alone. I was wondering if we should try acetyl- l-carnitine instead of l-carnitine to see if it's better. Any thoughts? Guest guest
We saw the same issues with our son on acetyl-l-carnitine (capsules, 500mg each). I am opening the caps and sprinkling roughly half a cap a day in his juice (divided into 2 doses). When I was giving him liquid L-carnitine back in the summer, we didn't see the bad side effects on the good things - increased speech, balance, coordination and focus, and better muscle tone in his upper body. Both the L-carnitine and the acetyl-L-carnitine are from the NOW brand of products, found at any HFS or online in numourous places. I was told that L-carnitine doesn't effect the brain the way acetyl- L-carnitine, that's why I switched to A-L-C in October. I guess we'll have to switch back to L-carnitine. Guest guest
How long did you try the acetyl-l-carnitine? Could the 'side effects' go away after a little bit? Could it be just an adjustment period? Did you see the same good things on liquid l-carnitine (which brand?) and acetyl-l-carnitine? Carnitine, so far as I know, is an amino acid, which is a sub-protein. I would first suspect that the child was not fully digesting the carnitine, which would cause bad bms and ammonia. Maybe add an enzyme which targets proteins might help. I am not aware that carnitine causes bacteria die off, altho I suppose that is a possibility. Guest guest
Tbrand for both is NOW Foods, which I bought at the iherb.com site. The specific link to the liquid L-carnitine is http://www.iherb.com/liq2.html . The link for the encapsuled powder acetyl-L-carnitnine is http://www.iherb.com/acetyl3.html. I'm sure there are other places that sell them, but this is where I found the lowest prices (aat the time I checked). I started on the liquid L-carnitine in June, 1/2 tsp twice a day (1000mg total) and saw increased speech by the 4th day. Specifically, one or two occasional words a day spoken whenever to 2 word phrases more often through the day, in context to what he was doing. I had originally purchased the L-carnitine in hopes of strengthening his poor muscle tone in his upper body, including facial muscles and his tongue. I didn't expect to see an immediate effect on his speech, so it must have affected his brain in terms of focus. Then I found out in the Autismbiology group that I needed to get acetyl-L-carnitine if I wanted it to really make a difference in his brain. I started with 1/4 capsule twice a day (250mg total) to see how it affected his bowels. The soft poops started about 12 hours later. I only did it 3 days, then laid off because he was getting diaper rash and nearing diarrhea. I started again 4 days later, and now he has more mild rash and soft ammonia-smelling poops but no where near the diarrhea like before. As for his speech, the acetyl- l-carnitine made him more hyper and therefore more talkative but did not affect his enunciation. I expect he needs to be taking it longer for that to occur. Hi All, We used Carnitor for three days and the thrush around our son's mouth returned for the first time in months. We are on the third week of rotating antifungals and it's been a big struggle to get rid of the yeast (thrush) around his mouth this time. Maybe the diarrhea is due to the yeast. Owens sent a message stating that she found some research that suggested the Carnitine increases a biotin deficiency thereby causing a candida problem. I can't remember the message number, but it was about 10 days to two weeks ago that I asked her. I am thinking of supplementing biotin and pantothenic acid but I don't have a clear idea as to the amount to give to our child so I'm researching a bit before leaping in. Take care, Becky in Chesapeake, VA
Guest guest
Hi: What's better Acetyl-L-Carnitine or L-Carnitine for our kids. Does it promote yeast/bacteria? Thank you.
