Subject: Your New Guide

She is a 54 pound golden Retriever named Dusty rose. Very sweet personality

and she and my husband's dog, Delilah, get along great. I had home

training, which is also great. It feels so good to be up and walking at a

much faster rate than I could ever go with a cane.

So tell us a bit about the new pup if you wish.

Thanks.

Oh yes. They have the same boots for the cold and snowy areas too. She is

from Guide Dogs of the Desert in Palm Springs. We are having home training

as I am on dialysis.

Aw! Copngratulations. What kind of adjustments in the training do they

make for diabetics or do they? I was only turning 21 when I went to The

Seeine Eye to get Peace. There were a couple diabetics in the class and I

thought it was only for old people then of course. From what I could

remember back to 1973 they went out on days we had off but their walking

routes or times were shorter.

I have decided to take the plunge I have applied for a guide dog. I just

received the phone call this morning and they are coming to do my home visit on

September 14th. I am also diabetic so I am very interested on how the school

will handle things with me.

Congratulations. Good luck and it will be interesting to see what the

schools do today. I got my dog 38 years ago and I wonder what has changed.

Plus I did not have to really pay attention to that back then.

Well, actually I had home training, so did not have to worry about the

diabetes except that I took more frequent blood sugars. When I went to the

school, they expected me to do the same, but if I had a low, they would let

me s top anywhere to " sugar up " with glucose tablets and rest until they

took effect. They feed us all on a schedule and always had extra goodies,

such as fruit and cookies around in case it was needed.

Also, as I am on dialysis, they did not come to my home those days. We

tried one afternoon a few hours after my dialysis session and I was just to

beat up to do any strenuous training. This is my 4th dog, so I needed

more reminders than I did of actual training. A few things have changed

since I last did training 11 years ago.
