I'm a very fidgety person and cigarettes gave me something to do--at

least until I had kids, hahaha. Then it was just pure addiction.

Hi,

I've never smoked, but my mother and husband did. My

mother threw them away and never picked up another one. On the other

hand, it took my husband several attempts before he was able to finally

throw the things away for good, so I can certainly appreciate how

difficult it is to quit. That was about 18 years ago! (Besides an

addiction, I wonder if cigarettes don't also satisfy some emotional

need that makes it so hard to quit.) Anyway, I wanted to mention that

the American Cancer Society offers free smoking cessation classes.

Maybe they might help you, , in your efforts to quit.

Good luck! You can do it! And just think what a

wonderful vacation you and your family can take with all that money

you'll save!

Best wishes,

Jeanne

I did cut down considerably the last few years before I quit, but I'm

not sure that matters as much as your self-identification with

smoking. Try doing things differently at times you would typically

have a cigarette--like if you usually have one first thing in the

morning, go for a walk instead. If you're in a state where smoking is

allowed in very many places (I'm in CA and you pretty much can only

smoke in your house or car now!), try to avoid those areas or go

someplace it isn't allowed.

Also, be aware that the urge may hit you suddenly years later in times

of great stress. Almost two years after I'd quit, my older son injured

his head and in the ER all I could think about was having a cigarette

and a pack of M & M's (lol). The feeling passed pretty quickly,

but I was a little surprised by it after all that time.
