Guest guest
Lavanda, I have been totally blind for over 50 years. I read Braille books, listen to books on CDs, and sometimes I use a scanner to read material. I use a regular keyboard, by marking some of the keys, you can learn to type by touch. When you lose your sight, you no longer have just two eyes, you now have ten! (called fingers) maybe OT BUT ... How many of us are blind here? And how blind are you ? Guest guest
Hi Lavanda no, I use a reg. key board, I know the letters and functions, and where they are located. I prefer a regular keyboard. I do have small dots on the main keys like the the " F " and the letter " j " , and some on the tab, and delete, just keys that I use more often. smile sugar " I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me " Proverbs 8:17. ~Sugar maybe OT BUT ... Guest guest
Hi Lavanda, I am as blind as the proverbial bat, no light perception or anything else. I have been a total since 1988. I read Braille only under the most dire circumstances as the sensitivity in my hands is not quite what it used to be before Diabetes. I suppose if we didn't have JAWS and other similar aids I would have to get off my lead veranda and deal with it. Guest guest
Braille and touch typing can be learned if desired, and provided that there no medical reasons for not! I taught both for 35 years, and in all that time, I only encountered one person which could not learn Braille, she had frozen her fingers, and thus had no feeling in the fingers. Another similar case, learned to type and read Braille with his tongue. maybe OT BUT ... How many of us are blind here? And how blind are you ? How do you read ? and how do you type ? Guest guest
Oh yes, I forgot to mention that I also use a regular keyboard. Interestingly before I lost my sight I was more of a hunt and peck typist than a touch typer. As soon as I lost my eyesight I suddenly became a fairly proficient touch typer. Guest guest
Blind since 1988, then age 33. Tried to learn Braille, but quit it. At that time, " talking computers " were just coming into the mix. It's all audio for me! Dave " ...In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. Guest guest
I have been legally blind since birth due to retinopathy of prematurity. My visual acuity is about 20/600 or so in my better eye, and something ridiculous like 20/2000 in the other. I am a fluent braille reader but also have enough residual vision to read very large print, so I have a CCTV and magnification software on the computer in addition to a screen reader. I get almost all of my reading material by scanning books (we don't have Bookshare here, unfortunately). I also use audio, but it's not my preferred format. When I do use it, I actually prefer synthetic speech to human, because I can turn it up to about 400 words per minute to get through more material. I do all my reading on either my BrailleNote, Book Port Plus, or computer. Over 20 years of Type 1 diabetes has not interfered with my ability to read braille (I have no complications). I was fortunate to learn it at a fairly young age, though I used to hate it and never used it much or realized its true value until I got to college. Now, I would not be in the field I'm in (teaching) without it. I type on a regular computer keyboard and am a very fast typist at over 100 words per minute. That's what fifteen years of spending many hours a day writing for school and work, and being exposed to computers from about age five, will do for you! Guest guest
Welcome LaVanda, I have been totally blind for over 34 years due to the diabetes. I learned braille then and relearned to type on a regular keyboard. When computers came around, I learned the computer keyboard and now do most of my record keeping, emailing (of course), writing of letters and storage of recipes etc. on the computer. I use braille mostly for labeling things such s spices and medications. I never was a very fast braille reader, so never read books that way.
