Hello Everyone,

I just wanted to take a second to introduce myself.

I’m a recovering compulsive overeater. As part of my recovery I’ve decided that intuitive eating is the only logical course for me.

I’m very excited to find this group and am glad to have joined.

Thanks,

Jon

Yes, I've found I'm one of the few men in most organizations like this. But I've found the journey we are all on binds us in ways that transcend gender.Happy to be along for the ride with you.

I think it's great to have men in this group.  I'm sure you can give us

a different perspective on some things that may really be helpful.

Hi Hope,

I think sharing stories is a great thing! Most likely many of us were

started on the destructive path of dieting/restriction because of

comments from adults in our lives, whether they meant to be hurtful or

not. Isn't it terrible to look back and realize that all this mess

stemmed from childhood things? I hope you can find the support you

need here. : )

Sohni

My name is Hope. Thank you for letting me subscribe to this

group. I feel like I am at a crossroads, and the only way to get out

is to let go. My relationship with food has been timultuous and I long

to begin a new era with a different relationship with food. I have had

disordered thinking about food and body image since I was a kid and I

was put in a foster home. My foster mother would negate my body with

crazy comments like 'my head was too big for my body' and she forbid me

to have sweets of any kind because I was too fat. I am not revealing

this information for sympathy; I am stating an origin of a disordered

way of looking at food and my life. Before the home, I was a

relatively thin kid with a healthy relationship with food. Since those

experiences; however, I have been on a dieting and binging ferris wheel

of eating that I would now like to get off of. I would like to gain

support from those of you out there who have mastered the art of eating

intuitively; that is, eating to fuel your body, not abuse it. Thank

you for reading. Hope

Hi, Hope,

Welcome to the group! I'm so glad you found us.

It may be helpful for you to know that it is not at all unusual for kids who've gone through the foster system to have disordered eating that goes back to those times. My husband and his first wife adopted 8 children, and had many foster kids, too, over the years. He told me that many of the children came into their home hoarding food and bingeing whenever they got the chance. I think the basic insecurity of that situation, even without adding in the verbal abuse to which you were also subjected, makes it likely that disordered eating will result.

Food IS nurture to us, from the time we're babies. We who have disordered eating need to learn how to re-nurture ourselves, by taking very good care of ourselves and realizing that we deserve to be and feel loved. It's never too late to start, and you're never beyond hope. You've already taken a huge step forward. We're here to support you.

Sometimes it goes great, other times i fall back in the diet mentality.

Hello Allegonda! welcome to the group!

I have gone back and forth between IE and dieting, each having their own mindset. I hope to continue to learn what I need to know to move away from dieting. Perhaps we can learn together.
