Guest guest
Rob had gagging/coughing - it was related to his thyroid. Guest guest
~ Low thyroid huh? How does that affect the coughing? I've been giving Malachi liquid Kelp for the last 2.5 months for the Iodine. Is Iodine supposed to STOP the problem? How about your son as baby--did he have reflux or anything? Malachi had BAD reflux and DIDN'T gain weight and hiccupped CONSTANTLY in utero and a lot when he was out. I've wondered is his problems started with the Thyroid b/c he has NEVER HAD one vaccine. LMK Thanks!! > > > > Has anyone ever experienced weepiness, CHEWING, and coughing till gagging? > > > > We are on day 3 and he is really weepy at pre-school and his teacher also noticed the coughing and that he just wasn't himself. > > > > My son was on Acyclovir for a couple months and had a persistent cough (till gagging) even at night. Guest guest
My son went through that last winter -but he was on nothing. No antivirals, no rx's. I think the coughing til he gagged was probably due to bronhial irritation from coughing so much and his was more than weepiness: he straight-up cried over EVERYthing. You couldn't look at him the wrong way. He is a "chewer" naturally, but it got pretty bad around that time - he was constantly gnawing away at his sleeves. It came around again this year but was a very brief stay this time, thank God.-TammyTo: mb12 valtrex Sent: Fri, February 11, 2011 10:13:45 AMSubject: Valtrex reaction questions.... Guest guest
well...his tonsils ARE enlarged and have been for a couple years now. His DAN! doc is aware of this. No strep on the culture, no strep titers, no parasites, and no food allergies that I am aware of (he is GFCF). Really the cough came about after starting anti-virals with Acyclovir and then we took a week off and just started Valtrex 2 days ago. > > could be strep, how are his tonsils? it could also be allergies, or parasites, or food allergy > > > > From: > Sent: Friday, February 11, 2011 10:13 AM > To: mb12 valtrex > Subject: Valtrex reaction questions.... Guest guest
I was reading in my book (Ultimate Healing System) - that lack of sulfur(severe) can cause the tonsils to get enlarged. (Also says if the throat if full of phlem, you should not be eating any fats, because an allergic reaction could set in.) (pg. 82) (also it says if the body has too much copper or too much fats it burns up sulfur - so even if you are getting some sulfur, if it's out of balance it's burned up before it can use it.) Food sources are: garlic, onions, radishes, turnip, horseradish, kale, watercress, cabbage, cranberries, and eggs. Juicing Sources are: (a lot of them- I listed a few) Red Cabbage, carrots, chestnuts, coconut, figs, nuts, oranges, spinach, brussel sprouts, chevil, cranberries, dill, endive, mustard greens, lees,, apples, asparagus, onion,s cucumbers, grapes, .... Also, sulfur goes hand in hand with potassium and sodium. (Electrolytes) I know that coconut water has a TON of potassium in it, and juicing carrots, celery, apples, asparagus, and cucumbers can help with both potassium and sodium. It might be something to try while you are trying to figure things out. laura > > > > could be strep, how are his tonsils? it could also be allergies, or parasites, or food allergy > > > > > > > > From: > > Sent: Friday, February 11, 2011 10:13 AM > > To: mb12 valtrex > > Subject: Valtrex reaction questions.... Guest guest
I don't know how it affects thyroid, I just know that it was a symptom of that. He would choke on anything and everything. (Google it..I think that is how we figured it out finally) (Rob is my 26 year old brother w/Autism, he lives with me because my Dad is very ill and our Mom died when Rob was 13). Yes, Iodine should stop that problem...did you do a patch test? Just curious, because I wonder if it could be Hyper-thyroidism?? (I'm going to look it up) Jimmy (my son, now 4, diagnosed at 2.5, and is basically recovered, although we rely on diet to keep anything symptomatic away..) had TERRIBLE reflux and he drooled something fierce, constantly throwing up. He was on Nutramigen, and we tried all sorts of other formulas. It was awful. I used to just have him drink mylicon (I know, I know bad mommy, but I didn't know!!) before eating...I didn't know what I was doing. Jimmy was low birth weight, and didn't gain...failure to thrive was thrown around during conversations with the Dr. -- Jimmy was vaccinated up until his 9th month...when he got the whooping cough from the vaccine..I started to question a lot of things..however, he was above and maintained all his milestones until about 18 month when it decreased and at 2 it went backwards... Guest guest
Weeping can be adrenals and thyroid and adrenals often go hand in hand. Chewing can be zinc/calcium/B5/adrenals, actually a lot of things. The reflux as an infant is often a sign of yeast and some claim that hiccups in utero may be a sign of yeast (I'm not aware of any research on this). Guest guest
Weepiness is pretty normal as far as die off symptoms go. Die off sucks and is very uncomfortable - hence the weeping and whining. You might try motrin to help alleviate some of the discomfort. Shouldn't last longer than a week or two, but some have been known to have die off for longer.Chewing is typically a yeast symptom in my house (although some say zinc deficiency for them). Are you on antifungal? It's okay if you're not - it's better if you're not, actually because you want to start one thing at a time. If you were on an antifungal well before starting valtrex again, then you just might need a week for the antifungal med to kick in with the increased yeast. I'm really hoping you didn't start them at the same time. If you did, die off is going to be way more difficult because you are now dealing with a double die off situation. Both of which aren't comfortable.Coughing - I'm not sure about. Could be die off, could be anything. We never really had that problem *from antivirals*. But it might also be that valtrex can cause nausea during die off. Coughing is also listed as a side effect. Most side effects are transient, some side effects can be during the entire use - I don't know which coughing would be - you'd have to ask your doc. I know that typically the head ache side effect goes away after about a month and is also alleviated by increasing fluids. *shrugs* it's possible cough would also go away - I dunno. Whether or not you want to wait it out and see what happens is something you should discuss with your doc. There's a fine line between side-effect and die-off. Die off is a blanket term we kind of use for everything but really, side-effects and die off can be the same thing and usually are, actually. If you look at the list of side-effects, they are pretty much the same as descriptions of die-off. And most of these side-effects go away as the body adjusts.Cheryl ~http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com~~@Gryffins_Tail~ Has anyone ever experienced weepiness, CHEWING, and coughing till gagging? Guest guest
I've been skimming through the answers and I'm surprised by them. Not that I think they are wrong - I can't say and don't profess to know. I belong to the "Occam's Razor" camp, though. Sometimes the answer is the simplest one. If it were adrenals, thyroid or anything else like that, why would there only be symptoms while on antivirals?Again, I don't know who's right or wrong. I don't have that answer. But my *guess* is that it's just a side-effect since it's listed as one and it'll hopefully go away soon. I guess I'm just a little more pragmatic than most because I wouldn't even have considered those other things. And I might've been wrong not to, I dunno. Guest guest
could it be yeast? Antivirals cause yeast and my son always gets weepy with yeast overload. Guest guest
I tend to belong to that camp...but, it's interesting to me that you wouldn't think " side effects " as - *deficiency* -- and the reason I think this is that -- adding these drugs to ones system can produce 'side effects' -- but what really is a side effect? I tend to think of it as using up resources because the body is trying to compensate. Like, take a 'cold.' -- If a bacteria has invaded your body and you get a cold, the side effect *might* be a runny nose, watery eyes, a headache...to combat this little bug, your body would then throw up the immune system which uses potassium, sodium, sulfur, vitamin C, etc. -- if you ate a little Debby snack cake, you aren't replenishing these things, but if you ate chicken noodle soup with garlic bread, it might get enough of it's resources back to combat it. (I mean, most people don't have colds 24/7/365) I don't know either, but I just like to brainstorm, and try things out to see if while your waiting for the Dr. -- you can make the most of your time. Plus while your miserable trying to figure it out, it makes the time go by and not feel like you are sitting there doing nothing...I guess I just like to be busy. (and assume other people like to too.) laura > > > Has anyone ever experienced weepiness, CHEWING, and coughing till gagging? > > > > We are on day 3 and he is really weepy at pre-school and his teacher also noticed the coughing and that he just wasn't himself. > > > > My son was on Acyclovir for a couple months and had a persistent cough (till gagging) even at night. Guest guest
Comments within: Cheryl ~http://www.gryffins-tail.blogspot.com~ ~@Gryffins_Tail~ > I tend to belong to that camp...but, it's interesting to me that you wouldn't think " side effects " as - *deficiency* -- and the reason I think this is that -- adding these drugs to ones system can produce 'side effects' -- but what really is a side effect? I tend to think of it as using up resources because the body is trying to compensate. I don't disagree with that at all. My son takes GH and it lowers cortisol so we take hydrocortisone. These things tend to be known, though. Now, that doesn't mean I'm saying that's not what's happening here. It very well could be that the antivirals are causing a deficiency. But that's not where I would think first because it's not the simplest answer *yet*. I would first see what I could do about the simplest answer and then move on to the next simplest answer if the first wasn't the one. But since many of our kids have thyroid and adrenal issues anyway, it's not the first thing I would look at - but then again, the difference between the way I look at it and the way someone else looks at it might be the fact that my son is already being treated and monitored in that area. Guest guest
Hey thanks Cheryl We have been on Nystatin/acyclovir for 10 weeks and just switched our combo to diflucan/valtrex last wednesday. I did start them both at the same time since we were already doing a combo. and I reduced his complex carb intake to just one meal a day. so I guess it is a lot at once. BUT he's been doing well the last 2 days (no chewing/coughing) did WONDERFUL in sunday school this morning. he is also been using specific words to name things and that's kinda new for him---I am trying not to look for things to *make up* gains in case they are just in my " mommy " mind however he snuck in my pantry some wheat pretzels yesterday morning and was in a lot of pain after his nap which sucked but we got through it.
