Happy birthday, Pat! Have a blast with some extra carbs and grams of sugar! I

can say this to you to you because you know how to take care of your diabetes

for the balance of the year.

And when you're drinking from a community bowl or whatever with those 3 foot

long straws, be sure not to drink someone else's backwash!

was familiar to me. I approached it closer and red the name. yes, it was the

girl I went to school with. she was a diabetic . I heard later she and her

husband were out to celebrate there anniversary. she drank a lot and had a hell

of a good time. she ended up dead and this was a true storey. you don't get time

is dead and I am alive thinking of her foolish night out to have a good time.

, and all,

Your friend didn't end up in the grave because of a single night of loosening

the reigns. IF her death was attributed to diabetes, she ended up there because

of a life style of partying and paying little heed to controlling her diabetes.

Pat can enjoy a night (or 2) out and put her otherwise good control on hold

because her lifestyle is the opposite. It's not a single high reading that does

us in. It's a lifestyle of extreme highs (and extreme lows) that put us in the

grave sooner rather than later.

The reward for 24/7 vigilance might be to enjoy a night out now and then. Or a

candy bar, or a cookie in moderation. A healthy diabetic lifestyle is much

larger than a single snapshot. For some diabetics, they need to walk very

carefully when it comes to enjoying a treat. Perhaps not unlike an alcoholic who

dare not have a single drink, lest they fall off the wagon.

A few of the fundamental rules are check your bg often as necessary to know

where you are at any given moment, get your A1C checked several times a year

(forever), and seek to keep it at or below the number your doctor specifies, and

to eat nutritionally. Oh, and to be as active as you can.

Dave, of course you are right . I know all about control over long periods of

time as I have been diabetic for forty five years. I knew this girl as she was

in my class during grade eight. we were told she was diabetic but never knew

anything about the disease other than it had to do with sugar. she had an open

candy bar left open on her desk at all times. we thought that was pretty cool

but could not understand why all the kids were not allowed the same, smile. the

teacher missed her chance to educate us all on the topic. I don't know anything

about this girls control because I just knew her from afar. it is like Wayne

from this list, I did not know him personally, but I was very much affected by

his outcome as he too died. this leaves a lasting impression on myself. it does

annoy me when diabetics just don't get it. there is not vacation from diabetes

and the sooner we realize this the better off we are. I am fortunate in I see

the beauty in vegetables. if I am really tempted I wait fifteen minutes then ask

myself did I really need a cheat and most times the answer is no. and I move on.

I think do I want complications or do I want good readings. I look forward to

good readings in the end. a cheat is a moments joy and the price to pay is far

too great so I rather go without . we have so much to be grateful for. I think

of my beautiful grandchildren, a course I am taking, a book to read, a walk to

go on. I refuse to get cot up in that negative stuff. I just can not justify it.

What a great attitude, !

Discipline in today's " if it feels good do it " culture is rare. I know for me, I

can enjoy little treats each day and remain healthy. But for some, the course is

not necessarily the same.

Thanks for your input.

I had one of Bahooka's wonderful bowls of homemade vegetable soup, one rib

and 2 stuffed shrimp. Oh yes, a wonderful Hawaiian roll and apple martini

and then for my birthday, they brought out a big wedge of fresh pineapple

setting on crushed blue ice with little umbrellas sticking out of it with

maraschino cherries. I have enough for lunch today. Oh, I almost forgot the

big yam.

Really yummy.

I am sorry to hear about your school friend. I never have excessive amounts

of alcohol. I could probably count what I have had on one hand since

finding out I am diabetic. I did have 2 cups of hot chocolate with Kahlua

when my daughter took me and a girl friend out to lunch.

I have taken a couple sips of 's milk shakes when I put Schnapps in it

for flavorintg. And I think Debbie made me a mild wine drink when the kids

were grilling for Labor Day. I think that is about it.

I have stopped drinking regular pop and stay with the Crystal Light or

Kroger drink mixes and occasional diet pop. I have a cookie here and there

and maybe a Hershey's kiss or Andes mint. But none of this is all together

on the same day.

I just lost a friend, kind of someone I was acquainted with and we talked

once in a while. She was only 42 and was liveley and vibrant at 3:30 in the

afternoon on the Saturday before Halloween and around six that evening she

was found dead on her bed from an epileptic seizure. She was not diabetic

that i know of and I did not even know she had seizures. It was hard for me

to hndle even though I did not know her well because she was soyoung and so

creative with music and parodies. We truly never know. So I am trying to

be sensible but I still do want to enjoy the best of what life has to offer

and I think portion control and moderation is a big part of it.
