November 16, 1951. Yes, just celebrated my 60th birthday and also celebrated 52

years of diabetes. In fact the Joslin Diabetes Center sent my 50 year survivor

medal earlier this year.

People in my grandmother's family called it Sugar when I was little. So I

really did not know the word Diabetes until I was much older. They talked

of different aunts or uncles or cousins who had died because they had sugar

really bad. I found that kind of perplexing because I knew sugar was sweet

and you had it on cereal or in cookies or whatever. So it was never

explained to me.

If some of the historic fiction I read where it's referred to has it right, it

was also called, the sugar disease. Which supports your families shortened name

for it.
